Week in Review (May 6 - May 12)

Tuesday - Speed work. My nemesis. The goal was somewhat less intimidating than last week, 6 x 800 at 9:05 pace, with a mile warm up and a mile cool down. Actual - 1 mile @ 10:42, .50 @ 9:16, .50 @ 9:12, .50 @ 9:04, .50 @ 8:54, .50 @ 8:50, .50 @ 8:34, 1.30 @ 11:24. First two repeats were a bit slow, but gave me a lot of confidence to get this done. Pleased.
Wednesday - All I had time for was a quick arms video, because tonight was A's theater performance of "Bugz." She was the only kid that had three speaking parts. Bummed I didn't have better seats for it. This was the cutest ever.

A's self portrait with giant, frizzy hair (LOL)
We also had a random hailstorm.
Thursday - I had high hopes for my tempo run after the last one was not the worst ever. Goal - 1 mile easy, 5 miles @ 10:05, 1 mile easy. Actual - 10:48, 10:09, 12:32, 10:36, .15 @ 11:27. So. Basically, this was terrible. My easy mile felt great. The rest, not so much. Combination of "it's hard to run immediately after eating dinner" and "this is way outside my comfort zone" and "my legs are tired and tight and angry." Cut my losses at 4 not-even-close to tempo pace miles.
Friday - Nada. A and I both got haircuts.

Saturday - L is on a new schedule, no longer working overnights. I had 12 miles on schedule and got up early so I wouldn't waste my day getting these done. The first few miles were pretty awful with some GI issues. Then, just the normal issues of being tired, not feeling "right," excuse, excuse, excuse. Got the 12 miles done. Goal was pace of 10:47. Actual was 11:27. Wah.

Sunday - Nada. Mother's Day did not involve a pampered and relaxed day. The weather was crap. Cold, windy and SNOW. Yes, snow. Took the kids to see the Muppet movie, then cooked dinner for the family, having a Mexican fiesta of chicken/bean/cheese enchiladas and chocolate Costco cake.
Monday - More speed work. Goal - 1 mile easy, 12 x 400 @ 8:55, 1 mile easy. Actual - 1.25 @ 10:38, .25 @ 9:00, .25 @ 8:48, .25 @ 8:44, .25 @ 8:36, .25 @ 8:28, .25 @ 8:24, .25 @ 8:20, .25 @ 8:20, .25 @ 8:16, .25 @ 2:01, .25 @ 7:44, .25 @ 7:20, 1.5 @ 10:59. So basically, I killed this. This was not the most awful ever. I wish all speed work was 400's. I also walked for about a half hour on the treadmill at home.

Weekly Miles Run - 27.20 (15.2 treadmill, 12 outside)
Weekly Cross - 35 minutes walking
Minutes of Strength - 20 (Wow. So, I was terrible this week).

Weekly Gain - don't want to talk about it.
  • Once again, two days of weekend and eating like a crazy person has done me in.
  • I either do it or I don't.
Everything Else
  • NOTHING.

Week in Review (April 29 - May 5)

Tuesday - Dun dun dun... first time attempting "speed work" in a hundred years. I pulled up paces based on a recent half marathon time of 2:18 and it gave me times of 9:10 for a 1200 and 9:05 for 800's. Now, at some point in my running life, I was able to run such paces. And I was able to do so for an entire half marathon. I won't lie, these paces terrify me now. I did my mile warm up, and felt pretty good. That is, until I actually started the speed work. On schedule - 2 x 1200 @ 9:10, 4 x 800 @ 9:05. What I managed to pull out was NOTHING close to that: 1 mile @ 10:59, .60 @ 9:20, .25 @ 9:52, .25 @ 9:32, .25@ 9:16, .35 @ 9:03, .30 @ 9:00, .35 @ 9:37, .25 @ 7:52, .50 @ 9:12, 1 mile @ 11:45 (with first 90 seconds walking). So basically, I was able to do one 800 sort of close to pace, that's it. I'm trying not to beat myself up over it, I haven't done speed work in a LONG time, and the whole point of this program is to improve my running so I can have a great race in NYC.
Wednesday - Walked a bit on the treadmill during lunch and tried the new abs video. I am amazed how taking just a little time off from doing core work makes it SO HARD again. After work, went to BodyPump. I'm killing the cross training part of my training!
Thursday - DUN DUN DUN (again). First TEMPO run in ages. I was actually dreading this more than the repeats, and was sort of surprised that while it was HARD, it was not AS BAD as I thought/expected. Goal - 1 mile easy, 2 miles @ 10:05, 1 mile easy, 2 miles @ 10:05, 1 mile easy. Actual - 1 mile @ 10:53, 10:07, 9:57, 1 mile @ 11:17, 10:06, 9:53, 1 mile @ 10:55. So... pretty decent!
Friday - Nada. Ate pizza. Drank some beer.
Saturday - Runs With Scissors half marathon. This was dismal. I was tired from the beginning. Maybe I need two rest days after a tempo run for a decent race? I forgot to look what the goal pace was, but I think it was around 10:55? I was closer to 11:35. Wah. A and I spent the remainder of the day at another BBQ.
Sunday - Lower body sculpting video.
Monday - Upper body superset with cardio. This one is ok, although when I selected it, I stopped reading at superset and didn't realize there were minute long cardio intervals. At least there were no jump squats? Then I did the abs video again. A joined me for a bit, which was mildly hilarious.

Weekly Miles Run - 25.21 (12.1 treadmill, 13.11 racing)
Weekly Cross Training - A bit of walking on the treadmill, nothing exciting
Minutes of Strength - 161

Weekly Gain - 0.8 pounds

  • And with that weigh-in I am officially at the highest weight I have been in a year.
  • Clearly, I am not putting in the effort, it just seems crazy how easy it comes back, and how hard it seems to lose it?
  • The other day I finally started tracking again, which is the Worst, but it worked for me the first time around, so I guess I have to do it if I truly care.
Everything Else
  • My friend that is going to NYC with me so I can bring A and I have decided to add a day to our trip. We are going all the way out there, we might as well see everything we can. We will be going out the Wednesday before and coming back the Monday after the marathon. Hotels are booked, I'm just eyeballing airfare for now.
  • Related: I AM THE MOST EXCITED EVER FOR NYC.
  • Related: A week into the training program and I think it will be a good fit. I think I have a good schedule going, and I'm excited to see where it will take me.
  • Related: Hearing about my friend Elizabeth PR'ing the shit out of a half marathon this weekend makes me sort of want to work towards getting some of my "speed" back. But then I remember how hard running fast is, so nevermind.
  • Work is still really busy and I'm still doing 95% of the support work. WTF. At this point, I don't even bother complaining because I'm at least busy. But really, WHAT DOES SHE DO ALL DAY???
  • Nothing else. Nothing nothing nothing.

Week in Review (April 22 to April 28)

Tuesday - NOTHING. Me and A watched Full House reruns and ate some Easter candy. It was Great.
Wednesday - Lunch run on the treadmill in my building. 1.25 miles flat and 2.75 miles of hills. This was pretty terrible. Pace felt ok-ish, but my feet kept going numb. I haven't had that problem in a while, but it HURTS. Headed to the gym after work, 10 minutes on the bike before class. Then an hour in BodyPump. I really really really do not like this BodyPump release. The back track is just dumb.
Thursday - Total Body Toning and HIIT workout during lunch. I really like this one, with the exception of the jump squats at the end. Went to the gym after dinner and struggled through 3.75 miles at what should have been an "easy" pace. I spent half the time texting Heather how miserable I was and how my NYC training was going to be an epic fail. Horrible.
Friday - NOTHING.
Saturday - A's school hosted their annual 5k Firebird Family Fun Run!! This year, we all made it out. My dad walked, L ran with H for her first 5k, and I ran with A. The first part of the course was up a decent hill, but it was pretty much all downhill after the first mile. A paced mostly ok, and ran with a small handheld the whole time, which she ended up finished after about 2 miles. This was the best she run (attitude and pace-wise) in all the races we have done together. The course measured a tad short (but mapping on a city map should have been accurate for a 5k) - so I'm counting this as her new PR!

After the race, we rode our bikes back to the school for the bike rodeo, where we got both our bikes checked for safety issues, learned hand signals, etc. A pretty good tine, with the exception of all the kids :D Did some shopping in the afternoon, which led to this cool Lego set that A and I put together after dinner.

Sunday - Got up early to go to Heather's house (obviously not my BFF Heather, my run club friend Heather) for her annual post-race party for the Cherry Creak Sneak (a pretty big race that runs near her house). We didn't run, but we were happy to head over for some socialization, food and beer. The weather was pretty crappy (rainy and windy), so I was happy to skip the actual running part.

After lunch we took the kids to the rec center for swimming. After dinner, I started day 1 of my official NYC training program! Cross-train day, so I did Lower Body Toning - 56 minute butt and thigh tabata workout. I really like this one. 8 sets of flutterkicks is so hard!
Monday - Another cross-training day. During lunch I hit the elliptical for 20 minutes and did 8 minute abs. After dinner, I did an upper body tabata workout for an hour.

Weekly Miles Run - 10.85 (7.75 treadmill, 3.1 race) - lowest mileage week, um, pretty much ever. I have been struggling pretty much since I quit the streak with finding a good run workout and pace. I've been tired and just not into it. So, since this was the first week before I start "training," I decided not to push it and didn't run, because I didn't feel like it.
Weekly Cross Training - 10 minutes bike (plus maybe a few miles with A on Saturday that I didn't track/log), 20 minutes elliptical
Minutes of Strength - 218

Weekly Loss - 0.2 pounds

  • I'm trying to watch, but trying not to obsess... how did this go so smoothly last year?
  • Beer consumption was a bit up this weekend.
  • Yogurtland consumption was down, I only went one time last week.
  • Only one donut this week! (But I did have some delicious chocolate chip pumpkin bread)
  • Thanks to a crazy sale at Target, it looks like I will be going back to the Lean Cuisine's at work for a while. 98 cents for a lunch is pretty unbeatable, although they aren't especially satisfying.
Everything Else
  • Brace yourself!! Last week, I sat down and created my TRAINING PROGRAM for NYC marathon! As I have said in passing, I would love to have a great race, and I'm going to be shooting for a ridiculously fast time for ME, and HOPEFULLY a marathon PR. My training is going to be based off the RLRF program that I have used in the fast - which means 1 day of speed work, 1 tempo run, and 1 long run, with 2-3 days of cross-training. I've nailed the first 2 days (no, I haven't done a run yet... the paces are pretty intimidating). Basically, I am doing the full 16 weeks of marathon training, and then to ease in the higher mileage, I'm doing 11ish weeks of a half marathon program - which really, is pretty much the same as the marathon program, with shorter long runs. Anyway, should be "fun."
  • Work is still really busy, and I am still butting heads with the other legal assistant. I use the term "assistant" loosely, because I for REAL cannot figure out what she actually does all day. Every week she seems to be doing less and less, and I end up doing more as a result, which is obviously annoying.
  • I have been trying to make an honest effort to get out of the house and socialize with people other than L at least once a week. So far, so good. I have another BBQ planned with my work friends this weekend, as we are supposed to have highs near 80!
  • Annoyance of the week - tried to do the new iOS update for my phone, and for some reason, it made me restore my phone, which took OVER THREE HOURS. Grrrr.
  • Nothing else, obviously.

Week in Review

This will be brief. I am super annoyed with myself. There are two main reasons why I wanted a running coach.

1. Someone to remind me that I do NOT need to run every single race. I know that too much racing is having an adverse effect on my racing/running. I KNOW THAT. But I still have race envy. Ultimately, this means that some races are likely going to get cut from my "maybe" list. Including Disney Wine & Dine and Big Sur. (Sad face).

2. Someone to tell me what to do. I normally do NOT like having a strict schedule, but I really did pretty well when I stuck to RLRF and my 100 mile training plan for Moab. Suffering from burn out SUCKS.

What does this have to do with my last week? Well... I know I have just come off two very high mileage weeks - what with 2 marathons and 2 half marathons. I have been fatigued. I only had a few runs on schedule this week, and they were supposed to be "easy" and they were NOT. I know that when I get into the groove of a real schedule things will improve. I'm just impatient. Anyway.

On a side note, my Leadville marathon pictures are ready. And they are AWESOME. For real.

The entire set of pictures is awesome. In every one I am smiling and I look like I'm having a great time. I just need to remember sometimes that not every run is great, but there is always greatness around the corner.

Happy Friday!

ETA - I hope this doesn't sound like I'm not happy to have a coach. I am. Transitions are just hard, especially when I'm having a "bad" week with running. I'm super happy to have a coach that is willing to train me and hopefully "reign in my crazy."

Long Run Friday

Ultra training had a ridiculously long run scheduled. RLRF had me running 15 miles at MP+10 (10:34). So... I sorta did that.

Goal - Run 26(.2) - Can't stop at 26 as a runner. Can't. Pace mostly unimportant, but I did want to run the first 15ish at the RLRF pace. Mostly succeeded.
Actual - 26.2 @ 10:45 (4:41:52 total). Only I think 7 seconds off from what I ran RnR Denver in a few months ago. The first 14.1 I did on the treadmill at the gym, but then I needed to come home to take A to school. The last 12.1 were done in the basement inferno. THOSE miles were INSANELY hard.

Longest treadmill run. Longest training run. Probably top ten of longest runs (including races) I've ever done.

Breakfast - Mini Luna bar (White Chocolate Macadamia), banana, Sbux light double shot (those things that come in the tiny cans).

Of note:
1. Peanut Butter GU is FABULOUS. I had one of those, a nearly expired Plain GU, a Powerade Chocolate Gel, two packs of GU chomps (one citrus, one watermelon). Two bottles of water, one with Nuun (mixed berry), one without. One Powerade Zero (fruit punch), and a diet Coke. The diet Coke was NOT as agreeable as the diet wild cherry Pepsi I had last week. Cause a MAJOR side ache the last few miles. At least i was dumb enough to drink it at the end.
2. Outfit change - 1 (I. SWEAT. A. LOT). Well, I was wearing a tank at the gym (My "I Run So I Don't Kill People" one), stripped down to just the sports bra at home, and DID change that. I wore my Nike capri running tights, no skirt. (Also no body glide, and no chafing anywhere).
3. Towels used - 4 (See above, about sweating)
4. Pounds lost - 3.6 (Yikes... I need to watch this)

Thoughts on this run?

  • 18-20 miles on the treadmill is not bad. Longer than that is a bit rough. Not sure how well I would succeed at these if I was trying to run solo outside...
  • Also, it is WEIRD "hiding" my training. L thinks running a 100 miler is the dumbest idea I have ever had, and the rest of my family is pretty much agrees with that. J won't say it's a dumb idea, but thinks I'll hate it. So my solution so far is to downplay training. Any suggestions? I've never come across this... my family is usually pretty supportive.

My two other runs this week went perfect. Speedwork on Monday was glorious, and my 6 miler on Wednesday went off without a hitch. Loving this program so far, especially in combination with RLRF.

Happy Friday!

November Numbers

Miles Run - 150.86. Probably close to the most training miles I've ever run in a month (usually I have a LOT more miles of racing). I did mostly the RLRF program, although I started my own (adapted from Fast Cory) ultra marathon training last week. Excited on that.
Races Run - 3 (2 half marathons, 1 5k)
PR's Set - Close to the slowest 5k I've ever run. But, really, zero.
Minutes of Plank -  112. I missed 2 days of planks. Still at 4 minute sets. They are still tough, so I will keep time the same for December.

Other Random

  • Today, December 1, is the 4 year anniversary of the last time I smoked a cigarette. I'm REALLY proud of that. That means that I have NOT smoked 29,000+ cigarettes. Instead, I have run over 3,800 miles. Not sure which number amazes me more.
  • The Peanut Butter GU I ordered in October finally showed up today. I'll try it during my long run tomorrow.
  • It snowed today. I really hate snow. And there is still like 5 months left of winter. That makes me gloomy.
  • I got the bill in the mail today for my mammogram and biopsy. Sigh. I have insurance I purchase on my own and a high deductible plan. Just my tests are running me over $900. That probably means I'll have to cancel the Edinburgh Marathon since it's the only trip I haven't booked any travel for :(
  • This was my last week of classes. I have finals next week. Crossing my fingers for all A's...

Why I Love the RLRF Program...

Not that long ago I was suffering in the depths of a major running funk. I've been running for quite a few years, but stepped it up when I quit smoking about 4 years ago. As most of you know, 99% of my training is done on the treadmill. So it is usually SUPER boring and repetitive. I was in a rut where even running just a few miles was a struggle and felt way too hard. RLRF has changed that. No. Seriously!!

After a sorta craptastic tempo run last Wednesday, I'm happy to report that my scheduled 20 miler on Friday was a complete success. I even beat my goal pace by :12 per mile AND ran an extra .5ish. Sweet!

I had the weekend off from running since it was A's birthday, and had my speed work planned for Monday. However. I caught some sort of stomach bug and was up with the chills and puking most of the night. Needless to say, my Monday run didn't happen. This morning, I squeezed in a trip to the gym, and had a pretty complicated run on schedule:

Goal: 10-20 min warm up easy @ 10:53, 3x(2x1200 @ 6:28, 2 min RI), 4 min between sets, 10 min cool down easy @ 10:53.

Which translated into me doing this:

Actual: 1.87 @ 10:43, 1200 @ 6:32, .12 @ 2:00, 1200 @ 6:26, .16 @ 2:00, .25 @ 4:00, 1200 @ 6:26, .15 @ 2:00, 1200 @ 6:26, .15 @ 2:00, .25 @ 4:00, 1200 @ 6:26, .15 @ 2:00, 1200 @ 6:26, .15 @ 2:00, .25 @ 4:00, 1.00 @ 10:34.

Total: 9.00 in 1:33:19

What? 9 miles? Really? Certainly didn't FEEL like 9 miles. And I like that. I never ever thought I would say 9 miles was "pretty easy" or "went by fast." That's awesome.

Where am I going with this? Well, I've never used a training program. I wasn't sure I would like the structure of it all. But you know what? I really like it. There are times where I think I stop sooner than I need to, or don't push myself harder.

***

As an aside. I'm really on the fence about my crazy idea of running a 100 miler at the end of March. If I'm going to attempt this, I probably should step up my mileage a bit. Anyone ever run 100 miles? Any tips? Thoughts? Suggestions? Deterrents?

Confessions of a Failed Run

I have done every single RLRF I've planned, with the exception of one a few weeks ago, when I stopped after a few miles because my calves were aching, and a second time. Today. Pretty disappointed in myself. I really pride myself on not giving up in a workout, no matter how rough, but today... well, I was done.

Monday was EPIC. I had been "challenged" to run 20x400s, which is outside the RLRF program, but I felt I was up for them. Here's what I did:

Goal - 1 mile easy @ 10:54, 20x400 @ 2:05, 2 min RI (walk), 1 mile easy @ 10:54
Actual - 1 mile easy @ 10:45, 20x400 @ 2:04, 2:03, 2:01, 2:00, 1:59, 1:57, 1:56, 1:55, 1:54, 1:53, 1:51, 1:50, 1:49, 1:48, 1:47, 1:50, 1:50, 1:56, 1:56, 1:55, 1 mile easy @ 10:26
Total run - 9.35 miles
Took only one quick break off treadmill to re-fill my water bottle. This was so insanely crazy hard. The first 12-13 weren't so bad, but then I really felt weak and light-headed. I was kinda thinking I was going to faint or fly off the treadmill. The last ones were DEFINITELY work. Since I have to start at 0.00 mph and work my way up, those "fast" 400s are actually at an 8.9mph pace (CRAZY FAST FOR ME!!), which is 6:44. I think I did at least 6-7 of them sub 7:00. That's insane, no wonder I was ready to die.
So there was that. Then. There was today.
Goal - 1 mile easy @ 10:53, 4 miles @ 9:33, 1 mile easy @ 10:53
Actual - 1 mile easy @ 10:45, 2.55 miles @ 9:29, 1.83 miles @ 10:57
Total run - 5.38 miles in just under 55 minutes

I really have no excuse other than my legs were tight and tired. I paused the treadmill to stretch and when I jumped back on and it wasn't any easier... well, I stopped. I had hoped to at least complete the 6 miles scheduled, but A had a special day at school where I was able to meet with her for lunch and go with her to the book fair, so that took priority. Next time.

I have a 20 miler scheduled for Friday. I'd really like to be at 100% for that.

Three Things Thursday

1. I am so so so so so jealous of everyone that gets to run/experience the NYC marathon. I'll be watching Silly Girl and T from Racing With Babes. Who else can I stalk??? As for me? Next year, people. Next year.

2. Now that I am back to reality (fall racing is done, I only have a few races left this year), I can really dig back into the RLRF program. I adjusted my goal paces based on my faster half marathons I ran a few weeks ago. I managed a decent (faster) tempo run on Wednesday and have BIG plans to run 18 miles at MP+30 on the treadmill tomorrow. Don't be jealous...

3. Spring catalog for school is out, and I'm SUPER DUPER excited. If I register fast enough, I can get back to back classes and only have to go TWO days a week. Woot!!

(and BONUS... I got my 200th follower today. Thank you!!)

Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon (Race Recap)

Sunday, October 9
Marathon #5
Denver, CO
Weather - Chilly at start (upper 30s), sunny, no wind

I registered for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver marathon WAY back on February 4. That was SO long ago, I had only run ONE marathon. A month or so ago I signed up to volunteer as a leader for A's Girl Scout troop, and all day Saturday was to be spent doing "training." In Colorado Springs. If you aren't familiar with Colorado, that's about an 85 mile drive from where I live. I woke up to light rain by my house. And it was COLD and WINDY. By the time I got to south Denver, it was snowing. Long story short, glad that weather came on SATURDAY, not Sunday.

Anyway, typical carb loading dinner at our FAVORITE restaurant. Yes, I had dessert too. And a beer. Actually, make that two. I went to bed around 10:00. Early? Yes. But I had to be up before 5:00.

Alarm goes off at 4:46. Get dressed. In layers. L had warned me that bag drop at the RnR last year was total chaos. We had gone shopping for throw away clothes, and over my race clothes I had an awesome sweatshirt and some pajama pants. I also decided with starting temps around 40 degrees, I would wear my arm sleeves. R met us at the house, quick breakfast, and we were on our way. He knew exactly which lot to park in, and there was surprisingly no traffic. Plan was to stay in the car as long as possible to stay warm. We knew we had about a mile to walk, so we planned on heading to the start shortly after 6:00.

Brr
Check out L's awesome track suit!
There were a few port-o-potties outside the parking garage, we figured since there wasn't much of a line we would stop there instead of trying to find one at the start. Did you know that when dudes use the urinals in super cold weather steam comes out of the top? Yep. True story.

It was still dark on our walk to the start line. Again, luckily R knew where we were going. We had to pass the Convention Center on our way to the start. R was in a hurry to drop his bag (didn't he learn from last year?) and get into his super fast corral 4. L and I decided to take advantage of the indoor bathrooms and stopped again. Had an interesting conversation with a woman about how nasty it is that people don't flush toilets. If anyone can answer me this, I would like to know. I use public restrooms quite a bit, and I bet at least 30% of the time, the person in front of me hasn't flushed.

Anyway. By the time we leave, we have about 15 minutes before the gun goes off. I'm in corral 7, L is assigned to 9 (don't ask me how she was in a corral further back than me). We get to the start line probably 5 minutes before the gun went off. Good thing we DIDN'T have a bag to check...

About 2 minutes until wheelchairs start
We try to weave through the crowds to get to our corral. (Insert loud, crazy, maniacal laughing here). No one was moving. At all. AT ALL. We got stuck about corral 3 or 4. Everyone apparently decided it would be easiest to just wait for their corral to pass by then jump in. Problem is that there isn't any sort of sign saying where the corral WAS, and no one seemed to be running in the correct place anyway. We shed our throw away (goodbye, track suit) and took a quick picture:

I'm assuming we fed in somewhere around corral 7 or 8? The beginning was SUPER congested and crowded. There were sections where we were barely even able to jog. Once we got past the first 3/4 of a mile or so, it thinned out enough to where I didn't feel like I really had to weave in and out of people. Not really the point of this race.

There was a TON going on in my head. I mean, I only ran the Bear Chase 50 miles TWO weeks ago. My legs didn't feel like they had fully recovered. I was running in a pair of Newtons that I hadn't worn in over 6 months. It was the coldest I've run in since spring. I was secretly hoping to PR, but my real goal was to run under 4:45. A pretty tall order since I have been running consistently a minute per mile SLOWER than I was a year ago. I ran my first marathon, the Athens Marathon in Greece, last Halloween in 4:42ish, so yeah, lofty goal.

Anyway. The course weaves up and down Downtown Denver. I'm feeling pretty good the first few miles. I forget that I'd be taking pictures if I was racing out of state. So I take this one of Coors Field (where the baseball team, the Rockies, play):

There were TONS of spectators on the course and we got lots of compliments on our running outfit. I commented to L that I wasn't having my normal "early race leg cramps," but no worries, they eventually showed up (maybe around mile 5?) Saw one of my favorite signs of the day "Bet this seemed like a good idea 6 months ago." Yep. Sure did.

Once we got out of the downtown area with all the super tall buildings, it was a bit less shady, and I took off my arm sleeves because I was getting warm. Yeah, I know it was probably only about 42 degrees, but I'm acclimated... Tied them to my race belt, but dropped my towel in the process. Stopped to get it. I still had my gloves on, which I would alternate wearing and stuffing in my pocket until about mile 17.

Enter City Park just after mile 5 (I think?) Had to remind myself... more pictures:

I probably should have started writing this last night, I already seem to have forgotten quite a bit. I do remember that roughly around the 10K point, L and I were wondering how on earth a). We ran 50 miles, and b). How on earth we were going to finish this race.

The miles go by, we exit the park around mile 7.5. There is an out and back section about 1.5 miles long.  On the way back, I am killing time by commenting on the various outfits people have on. I managed to spot Cheryl from Razzy Roo when I was about at mile 9.  She looked great AND saw me waving at her.  How weird IS it to actually spot someone you know when you race? I only knew a handful of people running this race and most of them were ahead of me (aka, MUCH FASTER).

I was feeling like I was going to need to use the bathroom. They had plenty on the course, but there were also billions of people running, therefore, long lines. L remembered the course would be splitting around mile 11, I figured I could hold it. Get to the split in the road, and yeah, I sorta wished I was following the large portion of runners that were running the half... Bathrooms right there, so stopped real quick. Then off we go with a MUCH smaller field of runners for the last 15 or so miles.

Pretty nice out and back section through a neighborhood. I made sure to take a picture of how pretty the leaves look:

Wish I'd have thought to take a picture of the whole street, but, I was a bit brain dead already. After leaving the aid station (maybe around mile 12?) I saw a Marathon Maniac up ahead that I thought I recognized from another race... L and I chased him for about a half mile, caught up to him at the turnaround. I asked him if he had run the Bismarck Marathon last month... he had. Small world! We wished him luck and were on our way. I was pretty psyched to see our half marathon split as right about what I've been running lately. And I even felt a little better. But then... every mile lasted FOREVER.

Mile 14 took like 5 days to get to. Finally pass mile 14 and a billion hours later I see a group of guys with a keg of beer. I stopped and drank a cup. Of note? L did too. And she HATES beer. Thanks, random citizens at roughly 4th and Downing!

Still feeling... decent. Obviously my legs hurt, and I'm having a minor bizarre knee pain. But overall, ok. Still running. I'm getting pretty excited because my Dad was supposed to be bringing the kids to Washington Park to spectate. That's where I watched L run last year. We saw her 3 different points of the race over the course of about 3 miles. I was really looking forward to it. Get to mile 16, getting ready to enter the park. Half expected to see them along the street (where we lined up last year). Didn't see them, then figured they would be in the park area by the playground. Kept running... lots of random people out since the park wasn't closed for the race. Stopped to use the bathroom a second time. And by now I know that my family isn't coming and it totally bummed me out. :(  There was a course photographer somewhere around mile 18.5 or so:

Go around the corner and there is ANOTHER beer tent. I take another. And so does L. FYI, I think this is probably the most beer L has ever had in her life. She thinks she is getting drunk. Hilarious. So now we still have like 7.5 or so miles to go. Getting tired. And I'm a bit sad about my family not coming so my mind is totally in a negative place. Exit the park. Wait. Everything looks the same. Have we run this already? It looks familiar. I swore I gave that kid a high 5 earlier... we actually asked another runner if we were going the right way. We came to the conclusion we were in the right place. Then we run across a bridge over I25 (I think it must be Franklin?) and then running through more neighborhoods. I think. I honestly don't really remember this section of the course.

We had at least 2 people tell us that they remember us from the Bear Chase race. Either we are finally "famous" or we run to much...

We are still running. Some people are walking, so it is a pretty good boost to actually be passing people for once. The herd has thinned. We get to an aid station somewhere around mile 22.5 and there was some chalk lettering that said "Only 3.3 to go!" only when we left the aid station, it was a few minutes before we even GOT to mile 23. I know people mean well, but nothing irritates me more than things like "you're almost there!" No. We are not. At this point a 5k might as well be a marathon.

Still running. L had said the only hill left was towards the end. And boy, was it a hill. I think me and L were the only ones who actually ran up it. Well, in my head we were running, but we were probably jogging at about a 4.0 mph pace. But at least we weren't walking. Get to mile 26. Holy crap, we are actually going to finish this thing! I have the Glee version of "Friday" jamming through my headphones, and we do our best to "sprint" through the line, even though we don't have much left. We did pass a half dozen people in the chute, but the guy with the sandals? Yeah, he smoked us.

Last push for the finish!!

As a random aside. My Garmin pace is EXACTLY what my predicted pace is per my RLRF program I've been on. EXACTLY. Since I wasn't doing the program for speed, but to build up mileage, I can't complain. Maybe when I fully recover, I'll speed up the training and see where it leads me. So yes, I plan on continuing RLRF. Love it.

4 minutes after finishing we don't even look that sweaty!
Awesome Finisher Medal!
So. The finish is somewhat underwhelming since the headline band, Smashmouth, was already long done by the time we finished. (HEADS UP ROCK 'N' ROLL, MARATHON RUNNERS MIGHT LIKE TO SEE THE BAND THEY PAID FOR TOO). Some food at the end, but I wasn't in the mood to take anything but water. It was a little chilly and we had a long walk back to the car. Plus, I was still upset about my family not showing up. :(

Marathon #5, COMPLETE!
We saw R briefly, then headed back to the car. The walk that only took us about 15 minutes on the way TO the race took about 40 minutes on the way back. Yeah. My legs were toast.

Thoughts on the race?

Good:

  • Plenty of water stations. Wish they would have had electrolytes at all of them instead of just every other one.
  • TWO GU stations. One at mile 8 and one around mile 20. AND... they were actually handing out Blueberry Pomegranate Roctane. Score! I'll admit, I took extras.
  • TONS of spectators. TONS. And the way the course was set up, we saw lots of people in multiple locations. One couple stopped us after the race, told us they liked our outfits and said we looked strong all race, and that they had spotted us a few times along the course.
  • I guess the music would be awesome, but since I listen to an iPod it doesn't do much for me.
  • Scenic course. For Denver metro, it was pretty flat.
Bad:
  • Really really chaotic and unorganized at the start. There should be a better way to line up at the start, but have to cut some slack since Denver IS set up pretty obnoxiously.
  • Again. It might have been nice to see the band. By the time we were done (1:19 before course cut off), there wasn't even EVIDENCE that they had been there.
Would I run this again?
No. probably not. Partly because they have already announced their date for next year, and I think it's going to be the same weekend as Bear Chase, and I'll be honest, I like the challenge of that race over the "competition" and "ease" of the RnR race.

Recovery... well, by the time we picked up the kids and got home and showered, it was after 2. I picked up burgers and fries from Wendys. After a quick lunch, L had to sleep since she was working later (poor thing). I had promised to take the kids to "Fright Fest" and this was really the only opportunity I was going to have. They had a blast:

And of course I was wearing my post-race "winter" gear, complete with my new socks from Razzy Roo:

Congrats to everyone who ran this weekend. And huge congrats to my Internet BFF for her new Half Marathon PR at Long Beach, Congrats Heather!

(If I'm leaving anything out... sorry. I really should have written this sooner. My memory sucks).

Case of the Mondays

Honestly. I felt like a slug ALL DAY. I mean, I took like three separate naps. I did go to a study session, met with an advisor for the college I'm transferring to in the fall, and watched "The Lincoln Lawyer" (which I thought was excellent). But just blah and exhausted.

But PSYCHED that even though I was dreading going to the gym since on schedule was some intervals... it went just fine!

RLRF (MP, WK1, KR1)
Goal: 10-20 min warm up easy, 6 x 400 @ 2:09 with 400 RI, 10 min cool down easy
Actual: 1.37 in 15; 2:03, 2:00, 1:58, 1:55, 1:53, 1:46 (6 x 3:59), 1.02 in 11
Total - 5.39 miles in 61:29

So my last interval was at a 6:31 pace (once the treadmill actually gets up to the pace, which I set for 9.2 mph). All I can say is I really respect speedsters. I thought I was going to die.

One more "easy" run, and then RnR Denver Marathon on Sunday!

September Stats (Rewind)

Miles Run - 157.56. My highest mileage month of the year!! Obviously almost a third of that is from my 50 miler. I really do like the RLRF program, even IF it isn't actually making me faster. I think it IS making me stronger.
Races Run - 6 (1 50 miler!, 1 20 miler, 2 half marathons, 3 5ks)
PR's Set - TWO!! Of course my first 50 mile and 20 mile races were PRs since I've never run that distance before.
Minutes of Plank - 120. Yes, I spent TWO HOURS the month of September doing planks. I think I'll stick with 4 minute sessions for next month. It's still tough the last 45 seconds.

October is going to be a CRAZY month:

So yeah. There's that. LotsAndLots of running. But. The good news is that today I was able to run for 3.76 miles without my legs giving out. Do not feel anywhere close to 100%, but feel pretty recovered from my 50 miler. Woot!

Fast and the Fabulous!

Munchkin Mile with A. Originally I was wearing the pink dot skirt, but A says "Mom, I know you have this same skirt, you should change." Yes, ma'am.

Her fastest loop EVER! 14:30, and with how long we run, her average pace was 13:05. Rock star!! Her sprint at the end? Super impressive... right around 7:30 pace for the last 20 seconds or so.

I followed this run up with my RLRF long run:

MP, WK3, KR3
Goal - 13 miles @ MP (10:42)
Actual - 13.16 miles @ 10:33
Total - 13.16 in 2:19:00

(More Than) Three Things Thursday

1. RLRFs

KR1; track repeats. Should have been done Monday, but the daycare at the gym was closed on Labor Day. Yes I would have done these even though I did a half the day before. This week the goal was 8x800s with 1:30 RIs. I really thought it would be terrible, but it wasn't NEARLY as bad as the 10x400s. And I met all my goals. Rad.

KR2; mid-tempo run. Sucked. So bad. Well, not THAT bad, but I still think these are way more difficult than a 20 miler or intervals. Bleh. But, I made my pace, so that is good.

2. Matchy, matchy race shirt for Kick Box on Tuesday:

Yep. We sure do go to the gym wearing matching clothes. This one was from the third (and last) Bolder Boulder 10K race, 2010.

3. School. Rocks. I have received As on all graded assignments. Thanks to bringing my textbooks to Cali and doing my readings (ONLY on the plane, I swear), I didn't get behind. Can't believe I'm already done with the first 3 weeks. Crazy!!

4. A - loving her dance and gymnastics classes. And her newest Sparkle Skirt:

5. Finally got my medals all hung up (well, only the Coast to Coast didn't fit):

6. Cooler weather = BOOTS!!

7. A had her Girl Scout meeting tonight. She had a blast doing arts and crafts for 90 minutes. Meanwhile, I may have signed up to be a Troop Leader...

8. Have you been on the Razzy Roo site lately? Use the 10% discount code and link at the top of my page and pick up some gear for your next race... AWESOME headbands, socks, tutus... it's all there!

August of Awesome (Rewind)

Miles Run - 151.04. My highest mileage month of the year!! (By quite a bit, and significantly higher than the last few months). Thanks to RLRF, my training seems to have improved. Not seeing an improvement in race times, but during my 3 "quality" runs during the week I can run longer without it sucking. Excited about that!
Races Run - 2 (2 half marathons)
PR's Set - Big. Fat. Zero. I had hoped to at least beat my time at GTIS over last year (only HM I've run twice). Fail. And Diva's was RIDICULOUSLY hard. :(
Minutes of Plank - 93. Yep, you read that right. 93 minutes. I didn't miss a single day of planks and I'm now up to 3 minutes a set. Unsure if next month I'll bump up to 4 minutes a set. Thoughts?

As much as I enjoy summer, I'm looking forward to some cooler temperatures. I really struggle in this heat! I'm super SUPER excited for my Disney weekend! And... my crazy 50 mile race is less than a MONTH away. Freakin!!

Outside of running...

To summarize (or if you are new to my blog), I went back to school and so far it is AWESOME. I love it. I'm taking 9 credit hours (6 in Criminal Justice and 3 in Sociology). The goal is another BA (in Criminal Justice). It should hopefully take just 2-2.5 years since I already have a BA and don't need to take any "fluff" classes.

A is loving Kindergarten and learned to ride her bike without training wheels!

Gonna Make You Sweat... and ALMOST time for Disney!

Costume reveal... part 2.

RLRF (MP, WK4, KR1)

I was PSYCHED when I saw my repeats were FINALLY going to be 400s. I've been doing 800s and 1600s and was looking for something shorter. Only. It wasn't much easier than the longer sprints.

Goal: 10-20 min warmup @ sub 11:09 - Actual: 20 min @ 1034
Goal: 10 x 400 @ 2:09 (400 RI @ 2:45) - Actual: 2:03, 2:03, 2:01, 2:01, 2:01, 2:00, 1:59, 1:59, 1:58 and... 1:46! and (2:44, 2:45, 2:45, 2:44, 2:43, 2:55, 2:43, 2:45, 2:44, 2:45)
Goal: 10 min cooldown @ sub 11:09 - Actual 1 mile @ 10:15
Total - 7.89 miles in 1:14:39

I know that is not SUPER fast, but I bet that is the fastest pace I've ever run for longer than a minute. And for that I'm pretty proud of myself. Only one more run until DISNEY!!

Foto Friday!

20 miler. Pre-sweat.
RLRF (MP, WK5sub, KR3)

Goal - 20 miles @ MP + 20 (11:02)
Actual - 20.68 miles @ MP +10 (10:52)
Total time - 3:45

So did you know it takes forever to run 20.68 miles at that pace?  Treadmill will only do 65 minutes before it needs to be reset. FOREVER.

So I'm only 5'0" tall, don't think I'm anorexic or anything. But wow. I haven't weighed under 110 since pre-puberty. Unsure if this is good or bad. But my weight has gone down from my average 115 since I started the RLRF program a month ago. Maybe I need to eat more?

Tweedledee!!
You know you want to run with me at Disney! Don't you??

A's new bike!
My ex actually sent A a gift card for a new bike (SHOCK!!) We picked it up today and as you can see, she is super excited. Mostly because of the doll/plush carrier. You can see "puppy" thoroughly enjoying himself.

Have a great weekend!

Week in Review (August 19 - August 25)
