Week in Review (October 7 - October 13)

Tuesday (10,863 steps) - Peloton and Olive walk before going to work.
For some reason Olive wanted to stand and watch me ride this morning
Gym at lunch. Took Olive for a walk after work and ran into Ben, who had put Batman in the backpack, so we added on a bit of distance. That was fun and weird for Olive, I don't know that she had seen that before.
No recollection of anything after that.
Wednesday (16,250 steps) - Olive walk before going to work in the office. Went for my run at lunch - speed work. Blah. It actually wasn't terrible and thankfully a bit warmer. Ben was home early enough that he joined for the afternoon Olive walk. We randomly had Chili's delivered for dinner. The loaded mac & cheese was fantastic!
I *think* we watched Murders, but can't remember this far out.
Thursday (16,172 steps) - Definitely was an annoying day. So many many months ago Ariel started to have issues where her horn would just honk when she was turning. Some days worse than others. We have spent months calling around and trying to figure out what it is, checked fuses, etc. We really wanted to get this taken care of before she went back to school. Well, a few weeks ago (like the day before I left for Divide) the honking got MUCH worse - like every single time she turned the wheel it would honk, so Ben & I actually disconnected the horn. We called the local shop that has worked on her car before to get something scheduled and all our research led back to a clock spring - which is an unusual part to replace. The guy asked "has this vehicle been in an accident" - and yes, it had. He suggested we push harder on the shop that did the repair work from when she was hit last April. LO AND BEHOLD, we had taken her car in last week and found that yes, that was the part that needed to be replaced AND they submitted everything to the insurance company and they were going to take care of it. ANYWAY, the shop is in Aurora, which is on the opposite side of the city where we are AND I had to meet Ariel there at EIGHT (on my remote day!!) so that she didn't have to sit there all day while it was getting worked on. We picked up coffee on our way back to the house. I went for an early run, which wasn't awful, and then we went to Chili's for their lunch special (ironic to eat Chili's two days in a row when I don't think I've been there in 3-4 years). We were JUST getting ready to get an update when we got the call her car was done. It was one jillion hours of driving back to Aurora and home. I never want to go there again. Met Ben at Torchy's for our usual Thursday night dinner. Took Olive for another walk. Watched... something. Finished up all our packing for the weekend!
Friday (15,722 steps) - Up much earlier than normal for a Friday! Took Olive for a walk and then Ben drove me and Olive to my office. Olive broke out her bee costume for the month!

I had multiple meetings but got the clearance to head out right after the early afternoon one. Ben picked us up around 2:15 and we started the LONG drive to/past Moab! The forecast was crap, it was supposed to rain most of the weekend. I was working on my laptop using my hot spot and kept losing coverage, which was ANNOYING. Ben wanted a beer at Outer Range and I still couldn't use their WiFi since it wasn't secure. At least I was able to log out before we got back on the road. It started raining while we were there and it proceeded to rain for the next 6 or so hours.
We were getting hangry and had originally planned to stop in Grand Junction to get food but stopped at the brewery in Palisade instead. Even though they were busy, thankfully the food came out pretty quick. Delicious!
We still had to stop in Grand Junction to get gas and to do some last minute shopping at Walmart. We had not been to Moab since we raced the 240 in 2020 (outside of driving through in 2022 to go to Antelope Canyon) so we were "excited" to be back. The aid station that we were going to be volunteering at was closer to Canyonlands, so we had to drive through Moab and then go another 45ish (maybe an hour) past town. We arrived around 11:30 pm, and thankfully Makinsie was there to show us where to set up and park. By the time we got everything unloaded and the bed made in the back of the truck it was nearly 1 am!! What a LONG day.
Saturday (22,751 steps) - We were awoken by the pouring rain just before 5 am. We didn't realize that it had started to rain again and we had the side windows cracked and poor Olive was getting rained on - and didn't even let us know! We closed everything up and then got up to head over to the "beginnings" of the aid station in hopes of finding hot water to make coffee. It was pouring rain and we still had the canopies that needed to be set up, the sleeping tents, and we had to move the drop bags PLUS start making all the food. Luckily, no one was upset about Olive being there - she was kind of a hit, to be honest.
We got our coffee made and Olive realized that inside the food tent was dry.
It was pretty much a nightmare trying to get the canopies up with it pouring rain, but there were enough of us there that it didn't take too long. We set up chairs and the fire pit - mostly for us volunteers since we were already chilled. By 9:30 we still hadn't seen the first runner and it seemed like it was going to be a bit before he got there, so I took Olive for a walk - thankfully it had stopped raining by this point. It was too muddy to go on the dirt, so we just walked on the side of the road.

I still had to do my run, and I figured I should get it done before we got busy. I changed clothes and went to head out and Olive was NOT having me leaving her at the aid station, so I took her with me. Hoped for the best since I was supposed to get a mid-length run in and she isn't much of a runner. I still set my watch up for intervals.

She was about 50% interested in running on the way out. Finally gave up on trying to get all my miles in and turned around. On the way back she did much better, which is normal for her once she knows where she is going. Honestly this was probably her longest actual run - most of our mountain activities are more hiking anyway.
The first set of volunteers - we had many people join on/off all weekend
The first hours back to the aid station it was actually pleasant weather! Sun came out and dare I say, it was even slightly warm. The first runner, Kilian Korth, came through and only was there a few minutes. It would be at least 3.5 hours before anyone else came through. Thor, the medic that I had met in person for the first time at Monster showed up with her new puppy, Athena. Isn't she the (second) cutest??
We had a TON of volunteers, but we didn't have a ton to do without there being that many runners out. I offered to take charge of the parking monitor on the road (only half the runners were allowed to have crew at this aid station, so we had to check for parking passes). Candice stopped to talk to me on the way to the aid station and got a cute picture of me and Olive "working."
The rain unfortunately came back, although it was on/off for a while and we kept getting amazing rainbows!
It finally started to get busier once the sun set. Ben was mostly assisting with medical since Thor and the other medic, Dawn, both also had to get sleep. They swapped duties so people could rest.
It was unfortunate that the runners didn't have an indoor sleep station, it was so cold and rainy! We had a lull in both the rain and the number of runners, so I decided to take a 2 hour nap with Olive around 11 pm. It took a bit to fall asleep and it was rough getting up just after 1, but I didn't want to be away for too long.
Sunday (12,950 steps) - The overnight had been ROUGH on people. It was rainy and muddy and cold. All in all, the athletes were in high spirits. I spent most of my shift getting food/drinks to runners so they could stay seated by the fire pit. We had a hard time having enough chairs for people and trying to find blankets, but I think we did a pretty good job of keeping people as warm as possible. Once we had a break in the rain (again) I took Olive for a quick walk.
We saw a herd of deer, which was super fascinating to Olive. It was also funny because the deer clearly saw HER and they were doing the "sneaky" walk.

Since we both had to work on Monday, we were going to have to leave before the aid station closed, which was sad. We were having a good time getting to know runners. Around noon a runner and her pacer came in, and as I try to do, I chased down the pacer and asked if she had put in a food order and she looked like she was about ready to burst into tears. I gave her a quick hug and asked her what was going on. Well turns out she is vegan and has been hungry for 50+ miles because the aid stations didn't have the vegan food as promised. Went out of my way to get hot food for both her and the runner (who ended up being the DFL runner of the whole event, Christine #225!!). They were both really appreciate of the personal attention and help and it was a great way to end our volunteering sending them happy and fed back onto the course. We stopped at the start/finish so we could get some swag. I was delighted to see that there were stickers from other races, as I really do want to put a Tahoe sticker on my car! Talked to Candice and Brian for a bit and then we really did have to get out before it got too late. Olive was exhausted after the weekend!!
We stopped in Frisco to grab a slice of pizza from Whole Foods and have a beer at Outer Range (my first one in weeks!). By the time we got home it was 10!!! We unpacked only what was necessary. After not having slept anything other than about 90 minutes on Saturday night I basically blacked out when I went to bed.
Monday (15,668 steps) - Thankfully, a work from home day. I saw a Facebook post in the morning about a Trail Sisters unofficial run/walk of 4-5 miles. Well, that's basically what I had on schedule for the day so I decided I would just take Olive for a long walk at lunch and meet up with STRANGERS for a run at 5. It has been MANY years since I have joined a run group and it's probably been at least a decade since I joined a new group without Ariel (waaaaah). Spoiler, the women were all really nice and I'm super glad I went!

Jenny, Sarah, Kate, me and Sadie
Me, Jenny and Koda
I definitely was the slowest one in the group, but since Jenny was sorta doing intervals I didn't get left behind. Which would have been "ok" since I know the area, but I'm glad it didn't happen. Headed home and we made dinner. Still had some unpacking to do, but we really just wanted to sit on the couch and recover (yes, still) from the weekend.

Stats:
  • 110,376 steps
  • 18.21 miles run
  • 12.4 miles walked
  • 20 minutes of cardio
  • 40 minutes of strength

Week in Review (Dec. 17 - Dec. 23)

Tuesday - 3.5 miles in the basement inferno, video trifecta (arms, legs, core), 121 push-ups, 121 jumping jacks, 4:06 plank.
Wednesday - 3.52 miles at run club! The weather was so mild I had to take off my light jacket a mile in because I was so hot. My friend Heather gave me this really adorable beanie (I've already ran in it THREE times!)

Thursday - 5 fairly terrible miles on the treadmill at the gym. I for REAL just need to quit running on Thursdays. Every time it seems like it is the Worst Ever.
Friday - 1.5 miles in the basement inferno, video trifecta (arms, legs, core), 111 push-ups, 111 jumping jacks, 3:05 plank.
Saturday - My mom needed a ride to the airport. A and I got up early to drop them off, then we headed to the gym. Cranked out a pretty great 9.25 miles on the treadmill. Took A roller skating and then after dinner we had to head to the airport. It had snowed a bit, and even though she boarded on time (about 8:00) and pushed back on time (about 8:25), her flight didn't get in the air until 9:45. Which is when I finally got to leave the airport. 4 hours at the airport AND having to say goodbye to A were NOT my favorite parts of the day.

Sunday - L and I went for a run on a trail section I've never been on - Clear Creek Greenbelt between Wheat Ridge and Golden. It was fairly chilly out (although, let's be real. 23 degrees is pretty dang warm compared to the negative temps I ran in a few weeks ago.) No one had been out yet, so we got to hit fresh powder. None of the trail was icy, and this felt mostly good. Knocked out another 9.25 miles.

After our run, L had to nap. I spent the day on the recliner watching a "Snapped" marathon. Headed to get an eye exam to use up the rest of my Flex account before the end of the year. Then I met my older sister at the Arvada Brewery with her husband. Had a festive holiday brew and picked up a growler for Christmas Day. They each had a flight, so I got to taste some other kinds as well. THEN, I met up with L and we headed to Chili's, where I proceeded to eat THE MOST FOOD EVER. Holy cow.
Monday - Sadly, I had to go to work. They at least let us out about an hour early. Not early enough for me to meet L at BodyPump, but early enough for me to go to happy hour with the ladies from work. Happy hour quickly turned into FOUR HOURS. By the time I left, downtown was all lit up, it was after 8:00 and I still had to run.

Ran a super quick 1.25 at the gym WITHOUT throwing up. Then, I got all nostalgic and pulled out my Nintendo 64. Let me just say that I used to be REALLY GREAT at the games on this system. NOT SO MUCH. I tried a few different games for about 15 minutes then promptly gave up. TOO COMPLICATED.

Weekly Miles Run - 33.27 miles (20.5 treadmill, 12.77 outside)
Minutes of Strength Training - 90 (missed one day of videos)

Weekly(ish) Gain - 3.2 pounds
  • I forgot to do a weigh in on Tuesday. Having the day off screwed up my routine, so I didn't weigh in until Thursday. After eating non-stop for the last week.
  • Beer consumption completely out of control.
  • Dessert and sugar consumption also out of control.
  • Food in general consumption also very out of control.
  • I don't know if it is just the depression of the holidays, but I am letting everything I worked for all spring and summer get away from me. Planning on a "re-set" before things get worse.
Fancy, high ABV beers come in snifters. Did you know that?
Tried a new beer, and it was DELICIOUS!

Everything Else
  • I'm done on social media. I cannot take it anymore. I'm so so so sooooo sick and tired of happiness and thankfulness, etc. I shut down my Twitter before Thanksgiving and Facebook is next. I'm leaving it up through the rest of the day and then it is gone too.
  • Obviously, nothing good is going for me now. No news on the interview, so I'm guessing I didn't get the job. I haven't really been looking right now. I'm out of town for 10 days starting Saturday, so I'd hate to get called for an interview and not even be in town.

Normal (Week 11)

Tuesday - 1 mile run, video trifecta. Although instead of the regular abs video, I tried one called "abs boot camp" - which did NOT have as much abs as one would have hoped.
Wednesday - 6ish mile treadmill run.
Thursday - 5ish mile treadmill run.
Friday - I had gone out for a drink with co-workers. I had to leave at 6. LAME. Then, 1 mile walk in the basement inferno.
Saturday - 6.6 mile run. It was really rough the first 30 minutes or so, but the end was really great.
Sunday - I got super motivated and ran 10.4 miles in the basement inferno. It was NOT the worst ever.

Monday - 6 of the best miles I have run EVER. Progressive run, hovering around a 10 minute mile pace the last 20 minutes.

Weekly Run Miles - 35.21 (ZERO races, all treadmill)
Minutes of Strength Training - 95

Gain/Loss - 0.0 pounds
  • I (only partially joking) partook in what I called The Donut Diet this week - I think there were only 2 days I didn't have at least one? Good news! Maintaining means that donuts are NOT off the table!!
  • For whatever reason, I am absolutely STARVING on the weekends. I need to figure out how to keep that more under control.
  • I  had a CRAPTON of Halloween candy. A needs to get going on eating it or we are disposing of it.
  • Pizza, burgers, and OH, more desserts:
Yogurtland
Chili's Pumpkin Spice Molten Cake (Yes, I shared)
Oh, look! My best friend - BEER
 Everything Else
  • Shortly after my blog post last week, I got a series of text messages from the last guy. Even though we hadn't talked in well over a week (which was fine), he found it necessary to let me know he was getting back together with his ex-girlfriend of many years. So maybe it was instinct that I cut it off with the guy even though we hit it off, etc. OH WELL.
  • I hadn't really given it much thought, but Jessa took me to lunch on Friday and told me, "don't take this the wrong way, but I am concerned about your rage level." Basically, she was suggesting I learn to take some time to myself that is NOT running/gym. I told her, yeah, you're probably right but it is under control. TURNS OUT, not so much. I had a melt down on Friday night. More on this (maybe) later.
  • Meltdown Related: I went to bed EARLY on Friday. A and I were watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and I dozed off. Next day, I'm going through my call history so A can call her dad and I see J's name in there. Turns out, A called J after I had fallen asleep because "I hadn't talked to him in a really long time and I missed him." Looks like they talked for over 10 minutes (after 10 pm on a Friday night). She says he asked about school, running, her gymnastics. He apparently did NOT ask about me, and I never did get a call/text from him asking why she was calling. She seems to think this is not the last we will hear from him. I disagree.
  • Meltdown Related: I LOST MY MIND at work on Friday. I am so tired of being broke. I cannot AFFORD to continue my employment at this firm. I really have to get started on looking for a job that pays more money. Parking ($125+ a month) eats up almost all my "spending" money.
  • Meltdown Related: After I freaked out I called my ex husband, HYSTERICAL. It's not much, but he sent some money and paid for my flights to/from Texas so that I can run the New Years Double again (well, and bring A back home after visiting with the ex's family).
Ever feel like you are at a major life crossroad? I have GOT to do something to better my situation so I'm not constantly ragey and losing my mind.

White River Half Marathon (Race Recap)

Cotter, AR
Saturday, November 19
Half Marathon #50 (!!!!)
State #42
Weather - Mild, sorta windy towards the end. Not much sun.

The White River Half Marathon was a late addition to our race schedule. We didn't even know that it existed until the other L heard about it from someone she was talking to after our race together in Rhode Island last month. Turns out it was only a 4 hour drive from Tulsa, and since we still needed an Arkansas race...

We opted to fly in early to Tulsa on Friday so we could hit the expo there before driving to Arkansas. Figured that would save us a lot of time/pressure so that we wouldn't have to rush back on Saturday. The expo wasn't too exciting, but we finally splurged on that shirt we had been eyeballing.

They DO exist!
This is what happens when people use a photo booth and cannot follow instructions
If you are looking for an interesting cross country drive, I don't advise the route we drove from Tulsa to Mountain Home. BORING. We stopped halfway there to get a Sbux. FYI, the Sbux in the Barnes & Noble 10 minutes out of the way is NOT a real Sbux, does not honor their promotions and you CANNOT use your Sbux card to pay. Anyway.

We are thinking we still have time to get our packets for the race as long as we can get to Cotter by 7. Unfortunately we hit a bit of snag when a semi broke down on a two lane road and we got to sit there for a half hour. Did you also know that there is no Applebee's anywhere NEAR Mountain Home? :( :( We opted for a pasta bowl from Pizza Hut. I tell you what. $6.50 for a cheesy bowl of pasta with chicken? Great idea. We DID have to wait about a half hour for it, but it was TASTY. We arrived at our hotel somewhere between 8 and 8:30. Exhausted, we were probably in bed by about 9:00.

Early wake up, just after 5:00. The race was starting at 7:00, but they were only handing out packets until 6:15. It was about a 15 minute drive to the school where the race was headquartered. Picking up packets was simple, we had about 45 minutes of hanging around. Obviously used the time for waiting in line for the bathroom. There were quite a few Marathon Maniacs there, so we chatted a bit. Got a chance to meet one that we interact with quite a bit on Facebook, so that was neat. Headed to the start line when there was about 10 minutes to go.

We were pretty excited for this race because 1). It was advertised as "flat and fast 2). There were aid stations every mile and 3). Rick from the Biggest Loser was running!! We didn't see him at the start, but he said he thought he would be running about 10 minute miles (!!!) and that people were welcome to run/talk with him.

The first mile was a VERY steep downhill (seriously steep), and we actually saw Rick a few minutes in. I tried to get a picture but it came out blurry. :(

You mean you can't tell the dark purple shirt in the middle with the white bib is Rick? Really?
We did say hi to him and told him we love the show. He was nice about our craziness. After the first mile, the course levelled out a bit. I felt sorta tired and my legs were a little tight. Got worried a few miles in when they started cramping. Thanks to all the awesome water stations, they loosened up a bit. I had worn gloves and arm sleeves, but once the sun came out, it got pretty warm. I probably tossed my gloves after about 15 minutes and the arm sleeves came off about 10 minutes after that.

The course was not that interesting, and it was not closed to traffic, so a lot of time/energy was spent dodging around trucks hauling ginormous boats. That's probably the only complaint I have about the race... especially with it being an out and back, runners on both sides of the road, at least HALF of the road should have been closed to traffic. I opted not to take any pictures until the turnaround since it WAS an out and back.

Took this right after the turnaround at mile 7
This was supposed to be my Rick redemption picture but someone stepped right in front of him and I didn't realize it when I took it. Awesome shot of L in front of me though
Course #2 picture... the river we ran by. It was pretty dark when the sun wasn't up
I don't remember too much of the course or how I felt. I only know that as flat as the course was, that I should have been able to run faster, but I didn't. We did pass the few rabbits that we picked out, and I ran a faster second half. Race was pretty uneventful until about mile 11 when the wind picked up.

The race finished about a mile from where we started (THANK YOU for not making us run up that huge hill!!!) L had sprinted off to the finish with about a half mile to go, and I bet she finished a full minute ahead of me :D Crossed the line and overheard people saying that they were having trouble with the timing... (as of now, a day and half later, there are still no official results). We got our picture taken - mainly to celebrate our FIFTIETH half marathon, then caught the shuttle back to the start line.

Chute 1 - Determined
Chute 2 - Promise I won't barf
WINNING!!

Parched, we stopped to get something to drink, and wouldn't you know that the second place we stopped had souvenirs. REALLY?? We weren't going to have to drive around all afternoon looking for shot glasses and a key chain. AWESOME!! Quick shower at the hotel, and then we managed to find a Chili's (!!!) to eat at. (Quick story... I used to have Chili's every weekend... I absolutely ADORE their big mouth bites. I think that might be part of the "extra baggage" I was carrying a few years ago. I went ONCE in 2010 - Las Vegas airport. Guess this was my one trip of 2011...) Anyway. Had a nice salad, TASTY DELICIOUS AWESOME Big Mouth Bites. Nice satisfying lunch. Then around noon, we started the drive to Tulsa.
