Wednesday - Cocodona 250
Thursday - Cocodona 250... until we dropped. So the "funny" thing about dropping in a race like this is, yes, we were able to get to a hotel. However. Our car was in Prescott. And allll our stuff was either at further aid stations or in Flagstaff. The first thing we did was head to the lobby for breakfast. For $300 a night we were going to get our money's worth at the buffet. We really wanted to shower, but were faced with an immediate problem. The only clothes that we had to wear were what we had been wearing in the race. That's it. "Luckily," I had a pair of shorts in my pack that I never wore, but I had to put my shirt back on after my shower. Additionally, if you have been reading long enough, you know my hair is naturally curly. Do you know what it's like to take your first shower in days, wash your hair, and then NOT be able to brush it? All these issues seem minor, but man, it was frustrating. We ended up taking a nap for a few hours. Woke up at some point ravenous, but we also had to start developing a plan. Neither of us really wanted to put shoes on - our only socks were all crusty from popped blisters, dirt and sweat. But we didn't have our flip flops. And there were no stores close by. And the bigger problem... how were we going to get either to Prescott or Flagstaff? I put out an emergency message in the Cocodona group, and THANKFULLY, a gal responded that in the morning she was headed to Flagstaff and our hotel was on the way. Perfect. Back to the food issue... we ended up calling a Lyft to get us into town for a pizza and beer.
We also grabbed some to-go beer from the pizza place |
It's definitely food we like to enjoy after a race, but not quite as fun when you don't have anything to celebrate. When we got back to the hotel there were quite a few employees in the lobby, including a guy Ben had talked to on the phone - he had called the front desk to see if there was a lost & found that might have flip flops in it, haha. Anyway, the guy was super nice and told Ben that he was getting ready to clock out and would drive him into town to get some cheap flip flops. Ben said he was one of the most interesting and friendly people he's met in a long time.
Friday - Amy messaged that she was hoping to come by a bit earlier than we had discussed. We had already been back to the breakfast buffet, so we just had to shower again and pack up all our junk, and finish our beers.
So what that it was like 9:30 in the morning... |
Turns out, the guy who was driving the shuttle bus was waiting for a friend to cross the finish line, so he asked if we minded waiting a bit. Sigh. That meant sitting AT the finish line. Which again, is NOT FUN if you haven't finished. We went to a burger place and got a snack and a beer. The drive down to Prescott actually went by pretty fast. Heading to Phoenix, we stopped at Front Pourch - the brewery we liked when we were in Arizona in February.
I didn't realize that Ben had been in touch with our friend that lives in the area, and he showed up at the brewery while we were there. Since we had to cancel our hotels, we were headed to his house to spend the night. Finally reunited with all our stuff, I took yet another shower (yay hair brush and conditioner) and shaved. We tried to stay up late enough to finish the growler we had bought, but that didn't really work out.
Saturday - Didn't sleep any later than I normally do, was up with the sun. We didn't have much planned for the day. I reached out to my other friend I know in Arizona, Heather, and she suggested we come by and she would feed us. Woot! On the way down we stopped at a new brewery - beer was meh.
She lives in Maricopa, which is FARRRR.... She did make us food though, chicken salad, and it was delicious. She also bought us beer and made drinks. It was HOT AF so we spent some time on her back patio under the misters.
We eventually decided to stay there for the night, and stayed up late playing cards.
Sunday - Same thing, different day. We headed out relatively early since Heather had plans to meet a friend for lunch. I found a place to walk before we got up to Phoenix. It ended up being at a resort of some kind, and it was HOT AF. We didn't see anyone else walking around. We *DO* think we saw a bobcat though, although when we tried to get closer we couldn't find him.
It was also Mother's Day, so we weren't sure how busy restaurants were going to be. I found a brewery that had some amazing specials - starting with a delicious bloody Mary, yum!
Beer was also good! |
Grilled cheese with a side of... mac & cheese. Mmmmm, dairy |
Monday - No alarm necessary, still up with the sun. We had to pack up all our stuff because we were FINALLY leaving the purgatory known as Arizona. Our flight wasn't until almost 2, but I still wanted to go for a walk, plus we had to still drive to the airport. I found a park where we could walk. It was pretty sketchy, reminded me of places in downtown Denver with homeless folks and garbage. Was kinda pretty though!
We got to the airport in plenty of time, and nothing weird happened with security. Our gate was super tiny and there wasn't anywhere to sit. We got a drink at the bar. Our flight was a bit delayed, but we weren't really in a rush. It was also one of the most awful and turbulent flights I have ever been on. It was truly awful. Thankfully, we didn't die. We sent Tyler a text to let him know that we had landed and just needed to get our bag, which didn't take long. We took him to 4 Noses for happy hour as a thank you for the pick up.
Nothing too exciting, had dinner and went to bed early-ish.
