Week in Review (May 1 - May 7)

Tuesday (11,521 steps) - Finally made it down to Sloan's Lake for run club. Barely got there in time. Ran solo, with music, fairly fast.
Wednesday (15,274 steps) - Rained. All. Day. Long. For the first time since we have been running out of Boulder, the trail run was modified. We ran a super speedy loop out of the hills. I wore my UD ultra jacket and was pretty bummed that I was soaked to the skin in a matter of minutes.

Made for a VERY long hour. Went to Southern Sun for about an hour, but finally left because at 8:30 our table STILL wasn't ready.
Thursday (11,398 steps) - Barre with Sienna. Belmar run club! I opted to actually "taper," and just walked the little loop with A and Ang. AND THEN, it turns out the "Second Saturday" folks got me a cake for my birthday!

We went to Rocko's after to celebrate with nachos (and aforementioned cake). Dropped A off on the way home to spend the night at her scout leader's house. She didn't have school on Friday and they were heading up to camp early. LAST MINUTE PACKING.
Friday (7,749 steps) - Up early to shower and head to the airport. No issues with the flight, until we got about an hour in. Then we hit weather and it was the most turbulent ever. Landed on time, but sat on the tarmac for an hour waiting for the flights in front of us to taxi. Airport was the most crowded EVER, and even though I had landed at 12:50, it was almost 2:30 before Lisa picked me up. We stopped at Burger University on the way to her house, where I had a delicious burger, sweet potato fries and a beer.

We sat around at Lisa's house until 6:45, then she dropped me off at Heather's. We immediately started the drive down to Bastrop. It rained the WHOLE TIME. We got to our hotel around 8:30, drinking a beer and watching Catfished until maybe 10, then lights out.
Saturday (38,421 steps) - Wildflower 25K!
Drove back to Heather's house for a quick shower before going to get lunch. Cinco de Mayo, so we of course went to get some Mexican food. I had some delicious green chili enchiladas.
AND THEN, we went to get some lemon meringue pie! Best post-race food ever. Sadly, we only had a few hours to watch Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant, before I had to get to the airport. SHORTEST TRIP EVER. My flight was delayed, but according to the monitor, not by a lot. TURNS OUT, we left over an hour late. Didn't get home until almost 10:30. Wah.
Sunday (13,497 steps) - Alarm went off an hour early on accident because I hadn't changed my watch back. Grrr. Helped Ang hand out bibs before running the 5 miler. My predicted pace was 10:35, and I surprised myself when my first mile clicked at a 9:50 pace. Uh oh. Walked through the first aid station, felt pretty good, then felt like I needed a break. Willed myself to run past the 2 mile marker. Another sub 10. Walked up the only hill that I remembered, turn around at the second aid station.
Ran well until the third aid station at 3.7 miles in. Tired. Hot. Stopped to walk with Ang for a few, then tried to run into the finish. Took another quick break after 4.2, then really kicked it into gear for the finish. So close to an overall sub 10 pace!! My crazy "fast" run earned me a 4th place ribbon! Woo hoo!

Stopped at the grocery store on the way home, only beating A there by about 10 minutes. We'd only been home a few minutes when Mo called and asked if we wanted to meet for a patio beer. Headed over to Odyssey, where we stayed until about 2:20. I dropped off A for her camp meeting, then I started my packing for next week. OMG PACKING IS THE WORST. Had crockpot green chili turkey & rice for dinner, watched an episode of Quantico. Where did the weekend go?!
Monday (15,303 steps) - Got up to go to barre, drove to the studio, only to find out that class was cancelled. Wah, I could've used the extra sleep. Run club at New Terrain / North Table! Thanks to the rain that we got last week everything was SO GREEN. After getting in trouble by a ranger last week we had to split the group in half. A wanted to run with Sean, which meant counter-clockwise, and running the steep way. At least the downhill went fine.

Stats:

  • 113,163 steps
  • 35.9 miles run
  • 1 barre class

Wildflower 25K (Race Recap)

Saturday, May 5
Bastrop, TX
Weather - Cloudy to start, HUMID & HOT
Shortly after running the Austin half marathon with Heather, I asked what other races she was signed up for. She mentioned she was running the Wildflower 25K in early May. I wasn't signed up for very many events, and once I found airfare for $95 ROUND TRIP, got the time off from work, I bit the bullet. 2 months before race day, it was only $70. What a deal!

Race Day

Alarm went off at 5:20, although I woke up a few minutes before that. I had gotten everything ready the night before, so all I really needed to do was get dressed, put on sunscreen, brush my teeth and braid my hair. Threw everything into my bag, and we were out the door by 5:40. We stopped at the gas station next to the hotel for coffee. We had a minute or two when we weren't able to find where to park, but were at Mayfest Park within a few minutes (thanks for picking such a close hotel AND driving, Heather!). Grabbed our gear and then got in line for the shuttle bus to take us to the start line. It wasn't crowded and we were there within 10-15 minutes.
The starting area was not too crowded, and it took just a minute to pay the $5 for park entry and get our bibs/swag. I wish the shirts had been gender specific, they were pretty cute! Last thing I need is another boxy top, though. *Note, everything is bigger in Texas, EXCEPT race bibs from TROT! Tiniest bib ever, which was awesome!*

Ate my honey bun and cycled through the bathroom line a few times. The 50K had started at 6 am, and the faster runners were coming through as the 25K runners were starting to swarm the start line, which had me a bit worried as the course immediately started as single track.
View from the start line!
A few minutes before we started, the race director did some last minute announcements. With the course starting with a climb, he said that if you were running the whole hill, start in front, and walking, start in the back. Heather said she was planning on walking. I kinda wanted to see what my legs were willing to do, and decided to start mid-pack. We had been lucky to start the race with some cloud cover, but I knew that we were going to start baking once the sun came out.

For the most part, people started where they should have. The hill was really no big deal, and I was able to run up the entire thing (for lap one). There were a handful of sections when the conga line got a bit jammed up, but I had managed to get into a pretty decent rhythm. Not wanting to push too hard, too early, I settled in for the long haul. The biggest "climb" of the course was just before mile 2. Even THAT wasn't that big of a deal, but I figured it was a perfect time to take a walk break, as we were halfway to the aid station, and I could get a bit of a rest.

The next section was in a wide and exposed area that had a lot of dead trees from a recent fire (I don't really know HOW recent, just that at some point, there was one). We then entered another wooded section before hitting the road crossing (where I would turn off for my last, small loop).

This section was more tree lined than others, and all of a sudden we were dumped onto the road, where the only on-course aid station was located. I was running well and didn't want to stop, so just got ice water in my bottle, grabbed a cup of coke and some watermelon and headed out. We had maybe a third of a mile on a wide, dirt road. A gradual climb, most of which I ran. Then we got right back onto the single track for a bit. There were some rollers, but nothing terrible. With about a mile to go we were on the wider dirt section back to the finish. There was a climb, and the only really muddy section of the route (surprising, considering how much rain Texas had seen the day before).
Feeling as dead as the trees in the blazing hot sun
Crossed the road and then a small amount of climbing before getting back to the start line in 1:17. It was already getting H-O-T. I couldn't wear my sunglasses because it was so humid they were fogging up, and I couldn't wipe off the fog because everything I had on was drenched with sweat. SO HOT. Filled up my bottle, grabbed a cup of pickle juice, cup of coke and a cube of watermelon and headed out for my last big loop.

I probably walked a bit more of the first two miles, but it's already a blur. The 10K and 5K had started an hour after we did, and I started catching up to the walkers within the first mile or so. Most of them were very aware of people running and moved off the course without me even having to announce myself. Got a bit annoyed with a guy who was blasting Nickelback on a speaker out of his pack. He was running with a small girl and she kept sprinting to catch up and it was probably close to 10 minutes before I was able to get out of hearing range from that. Ick.
The wide and barren descent was HOT. I think I also walked more of this section. I kept thinking that I should probably actually eat something at the next aid station, since all I had so far was watermelon.
Finally got to the aid station, filled my bottle, ate a few gummy bears and watermelon, and headed out. Ran the road section, and did a run/walk the section to the road. The race photographer jumped on the trail right behind me about a tenth of a mile before the aid station/finish and said "I'm following you!"

Came in at almost the EXACT pace as my first big loop, within seconds, around 1:17. I knew that the small 5K loop was actually 3.8 miles, so obviously the course was going to be at least a mile longer than a traditional 25K. Ultrasignup had predicted I would run in about 4 hours, and barring injury or some other calamity, I hoped to finish under 3.5 hours.

Filled my bottle, grabbed pickle juice, coke, watermelon and a fig newton, and headed out. I knew that there was no other aid until the finish line, but I was practically done. By now, it was approximately 87 billion degrees. Salty sweat was running into my eyes. So thirsty! I had drained my handheld four times already because I was so hot, and it was catching up to me. I started to get a cramp from drinking too much. NOT NOW!! I'm running so well!!
This small section was interesting, it always smelled like a campfire
Came up to the last big hill, and once I got to the top I paced with a gal who was running the 50K until we parted ways at the road. The small loop had a wide stretch of dirt jeep trail. I saw a gal in front of me that I really wanted to catch, so I concentrated on running as much as I could.

I'm not super dainty on trails, so passed a few people as I lumbered through the only muddy part. Just before the last single track section I passed the obnoxious Nickelback guy. Hot, hot, hot. Down the section with stairs, back up toward the finish.  Who knows, maybe there will be a video of my butt later. We met up with the section where we joined the big loop. We talked briefly, and I was able to get in front of her as I bombed the downhill section leading into the single track. On the stair section I came across... Heather! About a third of a mile to go, and I was definitely going to meet my goal! Crossed the line and got my medal. Heather came through shortly after and said she was stopping! She had rolled her ankle early in the second loop. Womp. I grabbed some trail mix and a watermelon slushie (BEST POST-RACE DRINK EVER), then we got on the bus.

Thoughts:
  • Well this went way better than I thought. The hills were manageable, and if it hadn't have been SO HUMID, I think I could have taken 10 or so minutes off my time. But, overall, pleased.
  • The aid stations were fantastic. Lots of volunteers. They had pitchers ready with ice water to fill packs and bottles, which was so appreciated. All the food was pre-portioned into cups for easy grabbing, although admittedly, I barely ate anything.
  • The course was incredibly well marked. I didn't really read anything before the race, and I missed most of the pre-race announcements because I was in the bathroom. Five events over two days, and all intersections had very clear signage.
  • I follow the race on Facebook and really, my only concern was the course being described as "sandy." It really was not bad, there were only a few sections where I even really noticed. I wonder if they hadn't had so much rain the day before if it would have been worse.
  • Starting the different races in waves was a great idea. I wonder if due to the smaller loops, if 45 minutes between would have been better? It was fine, but the race is still fairly "small," if it gets much bigger it could be an issue.
  • LOTS of swag options, although I would have loved an option to save a few bucks and not take anything, there was no option when registering for "no swag." I guess I could have just not taken it, but I did. I can always use another buff!
  • These trails were AWESOME. A little "wind-y" in sections, to the point it was almost dizzying, but they were NOT technical. Unlike Colorado, not tons of loose rocks, and unlike Michigan, no tree roots. I did look at my feet quite a bit, but in this entire run, I only stumbled one time! And I was blown away with how pretty it was! Not at ALL what I expected from Texas. Really beautiful.
  • Would I run this again? YES. TROT puts on an awesome event. I'm also eyeballing some of their other races...

Week in Review (September 8 - September 14)

Tuesday  (13,883 steps) - Peloton ride and Olive walk before going to work in office. Went to the gym at lunch and did some strength trainin...
