Week in Review (March 29 - April 4)

Tuesday (5,817 steps) - Up at 4:30 to do all my cross training.
(Plus a warm up ride that I couldn't fit in the screenshot!)
Did some bike and lots of strength training. Headed to work in the office. After work we picked up dinner at Chipotle because they were hosting a fundraiser for A's track team.
Wednesday (25,916 steps) - Work in the office. Was a nice day, so I went for a walk at lunch.
I left work early so that I could head up to Boulder for my 2 hour hike/run. I had been checking ever since the fire broke out over the weekend, and it appeared that all my favorite trails were reopened! I almost did something stupid and overdressed, but a tee shirt and my R1 ended up being perfect for cooler temperatures. The trails were actually really dry, which was surprising after it raining all day Monday.
I wasn't sure where the burn zone actually was. I didn't see any evidence of it until I got onto Bear. Then, it was sadly obvious. BUT! The firefighters did a GREAT job of slowing the spread. I was able to do my route quicker than last week, but a bit slower than I had hoped.
Got to the store in time to see Terri and Tyler and to get some food. Didn't stick around too late.
Thursday (9,349 steps) - Woke up before my alarm, so I did my 30 minute ride and some strength training done. Took Pika for a walk at lunch. I picked A up from school and we headed down to the stadium for her track meet. I had brought my laptop so I could finish out my day. It was a lot colder than I planned, so thankfully Ben and I went separately because he brought my jacket. A did awesome in the 1600 - she got a small PR!

She also ran the 800m, but she wasn't feel as well for that one and missed a PR by a few seconds. All in all, she ran really well!
Friday (14,042 steps) - Up early for a walk at Wash Park and coffee at Stella's. Work in the office, with a walk at lunch. After work Ben and I went to 4 Noses to meet up with Tyler, Kristin and Doug.
Saturday (5,837 steps) - A got a ride to her track meet so that I could get in my (insanely) long bike ride in. 75 minutes LASTS FOREVER. I was really excited to find out, however, that "Desert Runners" is available to watch for free (with commercials) on Pluto. I haven't seen that since it was taken off Netflix years ago. Around 10 I headed down to A's meet. It was definitely going to be warmer than last meet! A ran another very strong 1600 and squeezed out a very small PR!
She was also running the 3200, which is the second to last event of the day (of course). She looked REALLY strong in this one! A very big PR (by over a minute) for her in this one, finishing in 14:17!

We gave one of her friends a ride home, then I took her and Gracie to get food at Torchy's. Later in the evening we (even Ariel!) went to Jeramiah's for a happy hour. Finally, it is warm enough (sometimes) to do this again! I am really sick of how cold it's been this winter/spring.
Picked up pizza for dinner.
Sunday (68,819 steps)  - I had my alarm set for my long (LONG) run. I got up on time, but as has been the norm lately, I got out the door a bit later than planned. I managed to get to the trail head a few minutes before sunrise.
"Unfortunately," the forecast was pretty bleak, with cool temperatures and a chance for rain. It's really tough to train for a hot, desert race when it's COLD. Anyway, it was a pretty morning out.
The benefit to starting this early is NO ONE is out yet, except for the occasional people walking their dogs. I was able to get through Doudy Draw area only seeing one person! (A big change from last weekend).

I've been intentionally planning all my long runs with a bathroom in the early miles, and this was no exception, although I still had to do the first 3 miles without one. I *really* needed to use it and was super annoyed to find a chain on the gate! It took me a minute to figure it out, and then of course there was no toilet paper. Thankfully, I always carry some on me, ha ha.
I felt much better after that. It was fairly overcast and I still had on my thin long sleeve shirt and Patagonia Airshed (a new layering piece for me this year!) There were a few more bikes out by now, but nothing like last weekend when it was warm and sunny.
Kristin had plans on running a few miles with me and I was thinking how coordinating was going to work, and we came up with a plan that I thought would work.
My big elaborate plan for the day was basically doing a double loop of the Dirty Biz (with the first loop being a bit elongated). By the time I was heading towards my car the sun had briefly come out and I was getting pretty hot, and walking more. I was shocked when I got to my car and it was 18.5 miles - I thought it was closer to 17!! I told Kristin I was going to be a big delayed in meeting her (I felt bad, she was only supposed to do 6 miles and ended up just running until she saw me). It was a brilliant idea using my car as an aid station though, and I was glad I'd had the foresight to freeze a few bottles the night before because they were nice and cold when I got them. Anyway, in a shocking turn of events, I decided to do the smaller loop the other direction! I was glad I made that choice, however, since it's a bit more rocky and technical. A few miles into Kristin joining me and we saw a pair of bald eagles!!
I was walking more than I would have liked to, but I was already over 20 miles in at this point, so whatever. Once I got to about 26 miles, I really was just done. Tired and wanting this to be over with!
My 50K(ish) ended up being 32.6 mils and took me about 10 minutes longer than I thought it would, but honestly with all the gear that I was carrying and doing this all solo, I think it went pretty well!
Ben was finishing up his run at North Table, so we met at Bluegrass for some beer and snacks. Yum!!
Monday (16,556 steps) - Work from home. Took Pika for a walk at lunch - and it was warm and sunny! After work I still had to do my run. Greg had given me a "snowball fartlek" that I actually was not dreading. It seemed "easy" for speed work. It was blissfully cloudy when I headed out and not windy yet. The warm up was a bit tougher than it should have been. First interval was fine. A minute into the second one I got a horrible calf cramp and had to walk the rest. Third was ok (but also the shortest one). The cool down was actually really good. I guess the lessons are a). a longer warm up and b). maybe don't do speed work the day after a heavy 50K? But it's what Greg said, so I told him I would give it a shot (even though he gave me an out to skip if I didn't feel up to it).
Yes, I realize this is fairly pathetic for speed work, but I'm working on it and hope to get some "speed" back in the next few months with hard work
Ariel hadn't been feeling well since her race on Saturday and I had picked her up after her 3rd period. She even skipped practice! By dinner she was feeling up to food, but went to bed early. I guess now that COVID is done and we aren't wearing masks, colds are back...
