Today's workout was separated into two parts. I had been wearing my new Vibram FiveFingers around the house over the weekend and all day at work. Once I got past the fact that my feet sorta look like those of a gorilla, I decided they are sorta cute:
I had planned on just a short jog on the treadmill to see how they feel while running. Even though I wore them most of the weekend, I never ran in them. The plan? Ten minutes. They feel pretty good while running! First thing I noticed is that running how I normally would, my heel was hitting the treadmill fairly hard, which was loud. I think I was already compensating and trying to run differently so that wouldn't happen. I think I'll really have to test these babies out on the trail, I don't think I can get a good feel for these on the treadmill. But, it went well:
Then I swapped out for my regular New Balance shoes and settled into the random hill workout. Oh.My.God. This was going to be ridiculously tough, I could tell right away. My calves felt tired, tight, and a bit sore. Not sure if that was because of the Vibrams, although I have heard that running barefoot does work muscles you don't use (as much) while running in shoes. The hill workout was hard. And it was hot. I had to lower the incline once it got past 3.5, it was just too much for me. Somehow managed to get through with only a few short water breaks:
Once that was done I walked for a few minutes and then did a slow(ish) jog for the cool down - on NO incline. That felt MUCH better.
In other sorta-but-not-really fitness related news. I actually started to scrapbook my half marathon pictures. I haven't done any scrapbooking in probably two years, but I wanted a hard copy souvenir of all my races - and my stack of race bibs isn't getting any smaller! First two races are already done!

Outdoor Training Run - Big Dry Creek Trail - Sunday, July 11
Another scorcher outside. 86 degrees when we headed out (on time for once!) and I was immediately not feeling it. I didn't sleep well the night before (camping in the backyard with my daughter, didn't get much sleep). The first few miles were ok, but SUPER hot. We got to the turn around point and had some Gu. L likes "Espresso Love"
Heading back we noticed it was getting really dark over the mountains. Pretty psyched with the cloud cover, that meant it would cool down a bit. With about 3.5 miles to go, the wind picked up and we spent the last 40 minutes running against winds strong enough I thought my hat was going to blow off. Not amused.
Humbling to have a sort of crappy run after having so many good ones. The goal was 10 miles in under 2 hours. We managed, but it wasn't easy. I wish there was another area we could run, I'm getting sort of sick of the path that we run, but it's the most convenient for us.
And in other fitness related news? The Vibram FiveFingers... THEY'RE HERE!!
I haven't had a chance to actually run in them yet. I wore them around the house on Saturday afternoon trying to make sure they were the right size - it's HARD to get my toes in these things! Then I wore them out and about a bit on Sunday while running some errands. They are certainly "different" - but I think I like them. I plan on testing them out for a mile or so on the treadmill before I do my hill workout.
Random fitness part two - got "rejected" from Gu on my sponsorship request. Discouraging. I understand that companies want really kick ass people to represent their products. I wish I was faster too! Maybe I could get a second look from one of these companies. Sometimes it's REALLY discouraging to be average. Blah!!! At least they sent me a code for 15% off. Of course I have to spend $100 on product to get free shipping.

Outdoor Training Run - Big Dry Creek Trail - Friday, July 9
When the weather is nice I try to do a long run outside on Friday instead of going to the gym. Since there is no daycare on Friday, I leave straight from work and get my (shorter) workout in before dinner. It was hotter than last week, about 82 degrees around 4:00 when we were heading out. L managed to sneak out of work and met me at our usual trail and we headed out.
We kept the pace slow and easy (like we have been doing on Sunday afternoons) - and L tested out her new awesome fuel belt/water bottle that W got for her.
Pretty day out, but I think anyone that suffers allergies would struggle - most of the trail IS open space:
The heat always makes running harder, but anything is still better than the treadmill!
Garmin info here - 6.78 miles in just over 75 minutes.

Treadmill Training Run - Wednesday, July 7
Long run Wednesday. I'll admit, this was a tough one. After having such a good race on Sunday, I decided to not pace as slow for treadmill night - I'll save that for the Sunday when I run a lot longer.
I was more fatigued than I have been lately and it was SUPER hot. I know I say that a lot, but this was no joke. Considering our high temps for the day were mid 60s, it shouldn't have been so ridiculously hot.
Anyway, I managed to survive:

Treadmill Training Run - Tuesday, July 6
Anything can happen Tuesday...
I normally don't run on Tuesday. I do the 24 Hour "SET" class for an hour, then do random cardio (Elliptical, StairMaster, CrossRamp). Rarely run. However, I was off Monday for a recovery day after the Foot Traffic Flat, and I was in the mood for doing a few miles after class. Monday is "hill day" - so I decided instead of skipping it completely this week I'd do a short version (which I figure is better than nothing). It was actually not too bad! A little tightness when I got done, but I wasn't as fatigued as I have been in the past.
Maybe, just MAYBE, I'm actually getting the hang of this whole running thing after all... *wink*

Half Marathon #3 - Foot Traffic Flat - Sauvie Island, OR (Sunday, July 4, 2010)
Heading to Portland for half marathon #3 - the Foot Traffic Flat Half Marathon was the first 24 hour turnaround race we had planned. Headed to the airport late Saturday morning. Parked, took the shuttle and got there with plenty of time (with seemingly a lot of stuff for just one day).
After a ridiculously disorganized boarding process, we managed to leave relatively on time. I was mildly panicky on the flight - first, there was a TON of turbulence (especially at take off) and second, I sure didn't book this with a lot of leeway to get to things on time. We watched a movie on the plane (which makes time fly by) and shortly before landing I see this:
Get to the rental car counter - and yay, no lines - we had almost 90 minutes to get into Portland to pick up our bib/race packets. Luckily I had pre-mapped all the places we needed to go and got there in plenty of time. What a disaster it was! I mean, picking up the packet itself was decently organized, but... I'm used to an actual EXPO. This was a teeny tiny store that was trying to house hundreds of people. I had originally planned on trying to get some new shoes but the sheer number of people made that impossible. The free beer was nowhere to be seen (sniff, sniff) and the race shirt was "unimpressive"
We headed into Vancouver to see if we could check in early to our hotel. They let us check in, and we headed to Fred Meyer to pick up some stuff for breakfast (including "make your own peanut butter" - which was a smashing success). We were absolutely starving by 4:30ish, so we mapped the closest Olive Garden. We ordered the stuffed lasagna (and it was fabulous):
Stopped at Target to kill some time on the way back and then settled in to drink some beer and watch tv:
Tried to get to bed around 9:00 as we had a super early start. Could NOT sleep. I've been getting over a cold and every time I laid flat I felt really congested and had a tough time breathing. It was hot and stuffy, so I turned on the AC. Then of course, we somehow (again?!) ended up sharing a single (this time a QUEEN) so it was not the best night. Tossed and turned and woke up for good just before the alarm went off at 3:57 am. We were supposed to get to the host hotel to catch the shuttle at 5:00, and according to the mapquest, it was only a 17 minute drive. We assumed we had plenty of time... but then we got lost. Somehow missed the final exit and ended up driving around for an additional 15-20 minutes. Luckily there were two sets of shuttles and we got on a bus around 5:20 for the one scheduled to leave at 5:45 am. We had noticed the night before that the shuttle was supposed to drop us right at the start line (and being on the later bus we'd get left at 6:25 - 20 minutes before gun time). Here we are getting ready to get on the bridge to Sauvie Island:
They are NOT joking at all when they say "there is a lot of traffic" and "carpooling is recommended." Had we not been on the bus there is NO WAY we would have made it to the start line on time. The traffic jam getting on the island was literally MILES long. As it was, we were dropped late - at 6:41, not really leaving enough time to do anything, but using the port-o-potty is a #1 priority and I'm not fast enough to *really* care about gun time. Luckily, due to the sheer number of folks stuck in the traffic jam, they started the race 15 minutes late, which worked out nice. L and me with 10 minutes until (late) start:
Except... the beginning of the course is where all the people stuck in traffic were stopped. So hundreds of people are trying to run around stopped cars on one lane of traffic and in the grass on the side of the road. Not ideal. But, I did get to see "Team Edward" early on (happy to report I was faster than them and never saw them again, lol):
The course is advertised as "flat and fast" - so I was disappointed when I hit the Garmin at the first mile and saw my split as 10:20... which is NOT fast. Luckily, after the first 1.5 miles, the course FINALLY opened up and I was able to get into a better (and MUCH faster) groove. The course was... sorta blah, but some parts were really pretty - this was about 3 miles in:
The course was certainly flat (as they said) and the aid stations were every few miles, and had a lot of volunteers working. I was disappointed that they only had water at them (no gatorade?!) and luckily I found Hammer gel at the 4 mile station (which I saved for the halfway point).
It seemed like ideal weather conditions with temps in the mid to upper 50s. Noticed that it looked like it was going to be a REALLY sunny day. The course was not very shaded and I certainly started to get tired towards the end. But I also set some records! I finished the first 10K in under an hour (which I have never done) - I was going pretty fast (and was hoping I wouldn't bonk) - with splits around 9:30 (which is a TON faster than I normally do). Then the "real" problems started. First off, I have the Garmin Forerunner (405) that I absolutely adore. When it works right. About halfway in, I have trouble getting the Bezel (and also the lap button) to work. I *know* I am slowing down but I am obsessed with getting my mile splits in and for about 3 miles, I cannot for the life of me get the watch to work. Luckily around mile 9, it decides it wants to work again... which let me into the second problem.
Apple makes CRAP iPods. I know, I know. I've said it over and over, and yet I keep buying/using their stuff. Pretty things and clever advertising gets me EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. So at about 9.3 miles in, the left headphone starts cutting out. I'm thinking - "Wow. That's annoying, at least I can hear out of the right" - and less than 5 minutes later that one goes out as well. I carry my phone on me (yes, an iPhone) and luckily the headphones work and I'm not totally left without music, although I did hear some repeats as a result. If you aren't keeping track, this is the FOURTH problem I've had with my shuffle (and the connecting piece you have to have just to operate it) since early February. Ridiculous. Clearly the product is NOT meant to be used if you actually move around. Anyway.
I knew pretty early on that was long as I could just keep going, I was going to hit a personal record (again) - and I did!! Apparently this is 5 seconds off from gun time though, I was a bit slower - but this is almost 7.5 minutes faster than the my previous best!!
Crossed the mat (there were three of them, so not sure which one was actually for the half, which might account for the 5 second difference) and got my awesome finisher's medal:
Found L pretty quick, tried the famous strawberry shortcake (and it was every bit as delicious as advertised). We got our picture taken while waiting for the shuttle bus to fill so we could leave:
L and I both hit PR's (if she had a watch I'm sure she could have gone under 2 hours):
A few things of note. I need to allow more time in between packet pick up and getting to a shuttle (or start line). I do not like feeling stressed and panicky!! Everything worked out THIS time, but I just need to double (or triple) how long I think things might actually take. Oh. And I'm getting pretty good at this whole "running thing" - ha :)
The sticker I've had for months finally went on Bee Rad:

Outdoor Training Run - Big Dry Creek Trail - Friday, July 2
The forecast for today was 89 degrees. By the time I got off work (early, wahoo!!!) it was in the 60's and raining. I had planned to run the open space again, but the weather was clearer the further east I went so I headed to the trail we run every weekend. It was 66 degrees when I headed out - cloudy and lightly raining:
I was feeling pretty good - and then... let's just say thank goodness for the port-o-potties around mile 2. Wow.
The weather cleared up and it seemed pretty hot out. I was glad I had decided to bring my fuel belt, I ended up drinking more than half the water I brought with me. Even though I was feeling like I *could* go faster, I really didn't want to. Last run before my half on Sunday and I wanted to take it pretty easy so I stopped and took some pics along the way.
Even with all my stops, I still managed just over a 10K in 70 minutes. Probably about the pace I should have been doing anyway.

Treadmill Training Run - Wednesday, June 30
Last long run before the next half. I wasn't looking forward to it. It's been a long week with ridiculously high temps (90+ every day) and I was tired. I hesitate to even SAY this, I feel like it might jinx me. But. It was actually a pretty good run. I'd even be willing to say one of the best runs I have had (on a treadmill) in months. I didn't feel tired once I started and I kept raising the speed.
I haven't done over 6 miles on my "long run treadmill day" in ages. I've typically been slowing down the pace a bit. I figured that since I've certainly been slowing my outdoor long run, I need to actually work on my speed a bit, and I think it went well. One more short run before Portland!
Random fitness related information:
June marks the most miles I have ever logged in a single month - 126.78!!
Saturday, July 3 at 8:00 pm marks the last day of the 1/2marathon-a-thon!
I've applied for another sponsorship, this time with GU!!!
Joined a neat website (that got me super cool hat/shirt/sticker) - half2run
Plan on joining the coolest Half Marathon club!! Half Fanatics! - I will be eligible for this club after completing the Red Wing River City Ramble Half Marathon in Minnesota next month.

Treadmill Training Run - Monday, June 28
I'm never super motivated on Monday. It's the day after I've just done my longest run of the week AND it's the first day of work for the week. I was even less thrilled when I got to the gym last night and all the treadmills were full (except for the two that weren't working). After stalking the treadmill bay, one opened up. I was even LESS thrilled that it was one of the "other" style of treadmills. I don't know WHAT it is with them, but even running at NO incline it feels like running uphill. So, yay. Hill workout on an already tough machine. This was not the worst run ever, but I certainly struggled. It was hot, and the machine was awful. The program was tough - called "variety" - L's was even more challenging, so it could have been worse:
Capped out at I think 4.0, but a LOT of it was at 2.0 and 3.0 - which is pretty hard. Did pretty well, kept a pace of over 5.2 mph for the full hour without a break:
After that was finished, it felt quite luxurious to do a jog for another 20 minutes. I walked the first couple of minutes to lower my heart rate and still did 1.5ish. This was last hill workout before the Foot Traffic Flat - and only 2 more regular runs are scheduled. 1 hour (or so) on Wednesday and a few miles on Friday.

Outdoor Training Run - Big Dry Creek Trail - Sunday, June 27
It was yet another hot day. Probably about 80 when we set out. Initial goal was 10 miles, and last week we discovered that from our current starting point, the end of the trail round trip is just about half marathon distance. This time we decided to see how far the trail went at the first fork in the road in the other direction. Added just over 2.5 miles to our run, so seems we can at least cap out closer to 16 miles with minimal street crossings.
I also had a different plan of attack to work in the walk breaks to keep my heart rate lower. Last week the breaks were based on distance, this time I was basing on time. So, run 14 minutes and walk 1. Worked out very well I think. In 1 hour 55 minutes we did 10.32 miles, a fairly decent pace. We also rationed water better this time - each walk break we drank 1/3 to 1/2 of the 10 oz bottle.
View of Westminster:
After completing the run, we had Sbux, and I'm pretty sure it was the best iced coffee with white mocha I've ever had. Next long run is our half marathon in Oregon!

Outdoor Training Run - Davidson Mesa Open Space AND Treadmill Training Run - Friday, June 25
Yep. I did both today. First off, sometimes I don't really think things through. I knew it was supposed to be hot today. The forecast was 94 degrees, and in Colorado that is a DRY hot. No wind, no clouds. But I had this brilliant idea to do an outdoor (leisurely) run today anyway. I figure if nothing else it will be decent training for Hawaii. On my way home I always drive past this open space and I figured today was as good as any to stop and run, even though Bee Rad said this:
I slathered on the sunscreen, grabbed my hat and bottle of water and headed over to the trailhead to see what I was up against.
Then I noticed this:
Hmmm. Duly noted, I'll keep an eye out. Immediately I knew it was gonna be hot (duh, 99 degrees, remember??) Anyway, I was going to stick with my "jog 10 minutes and walk 1" plan. Worked pretty well for me. I was hot but not exhausted. And if it was 20 degrees cooler I could have enjoyed the view more. I have to admit that Colorado has some gorgeous scenery (which, I must add that the iPhone 4 takes a much better picture than the prehistoric 1st Gen I was using before):
The loop that I did was about 3 miles. Under better circumstances I would have either done it a second time or I would have crossed the street and done a quick jog around the lake.
But, in addition to it being the first time I have ever run in any weather over 90 degrees, it was also the first (and possibly the only) time I have ever run in just a bra top and running skirt:
Garmin info here (and W, the average heart rate looks pretty good!):
I still had some time to kill, and even though I'm still suffering from a cold, I feel better when I exercise, so I headed over to the gym. Apparently if I don't want to feel miserably hot in the gym, all I need to do is run outside in ridiculously hot temps. I opted for the "Progam #6 - Aerobic" for an hour again:
I even jogged another 20 minutes after that to total just under 7 miles. Happy Friday!
