What's Next (Goals?)

Needless to say, when you are out on a course for 8+ hours with no iPod and nothing to occupy your brain, you spend a lot of time thinking and planning. So. Here's what I have come up with.
  • Running a 100 miler is insane.
    • Training is very time consuming
    • Training is lonely because no one else is as crazy as you are
    • A LOT of training for one day, which may or may not go your way
    • To be successful, you have to rely A LOT on other people
    • With all the above said, I'm nixing (for now) the idea of running another 100
  • Running a 50 miler is insane
    • See above
    • I may or may not ever run another 50 miler, and if I do, I will NOT pick a race where 50 is the furthest distance. After this weekend, I am even MORE convinced that "racing the clock" is the freaking worst. So unless I all of a sudden become MUCH faster, a 50 isn't in the cards.
  • Running 50k is insane, but do-able.
    • Training really isn't much different than marathon/half marathon training (FOR ME)
    • Most 50k's are on trails, and I really like trails
    • I can probably talk at least SOMEONE into joining me for a 50k
    • Same rule applies as my 50 mile rule - I will not race the clock, so I really don't want to run a 50k if that is the longest distance
  • Running marathons
    • I think I still would like to run these. They are challenging, and for the most part, fun.
    • When they are no longer "fun," I will no longer run.
    • See above - I don't want to "race the clock" - this will also apply to traveling and my crazy flights.
    • Related: I plan on traveling a lot less
    • Related: I think I will set a (very long term) goal to run a full (or longer) in every state. I will be a LOT more picky about the races I run. So if you have a race in your state that you think I would love, please send info my way.
  • Running half marathons
    • I think I would like to go back to running more of these.
      • Colorado has over 70 half marathons. (Long term) goal is to run every one in the state (or the marathon if there is one). This will take ages as there are a few weekends where there are 4-5 different races on the same day.
      • Related: I've only run a dozen or so to date. This will take a while.
      • Wyoming has over a dozen half marathons. Will have the same goal as Colorado, since Wyoming is close.
  • Running the continents
    • Obviously a goal, I have run 4 of the 7 already.
    • This will take a jillion years since Australia and Antarctica are ridiculously expensive.
So... what does this all mean? Well, I am not really registered for that many (FOR ME) races. I'm likely going to be filling my schedule with more local runs. And as for training, well, I think I need to get into a groove again, and just find out whatever works. All while making sure I don't jack up any more body parts and keep the knee/ankles in check.

With that said. I have race fever and I am dying to register for SOMETHING but I actually plan on waiting to see how Marine Corps goes this weekend.

50 Half Marathon in 50 States (and DC)

Roughly 2.5 years ago, L and I set a goal to run a half marathon in all the states. Which was pretty funny, because the first half marathon we ran was the longest either of us had run, and it didn't go particularly great for either of us. Maybe the goal was developed because we traveled for that race?

Anyway... feel free to skip this blog if you don't want to read about me reminiscing about my adventure across the US. This will be mostly pictures, and I'm not going to go crazy posting from all the races.

GMAA Half Marathon (Race Recap)

Sunday, October 14
South Hero, VT
Half Marathon #70
State #50!!!
Weather - very chilly with strong winds, overcast (very light misting mid-race)

Originally state #50 was supposed to be West Virginia, because we had been planning on running the "Mad Half" in Vermont in July. But airfare was ridiculous and we could not make it work. We found the GMAA half marathon and registered... it was some ridiculously inexpensive cost like $30. Well... airfare is NEVER cheap to Vermont from Colorado, so we looked at surrounding airports and booked our flights through Hartford. Which... if you recall our St. Louis/Cincinnati drive, they LOOK close on a map, but they really aren't.

Travel Day

L and I are not on the same flights. I booked as soon as I found reasonably priced legs. By the time she booked, the same flights were NOT the same price, so she was on completely different airlines even. My first leg to ORD (Chicago) left Denver at 8:47 am. I left the house just after 6 and got there in plenty of time. First flight was on time. I somehow got put in premium seating. This was one of the best flight experiences of my life. I had a footrest, a super reclining seat. My own tv with FREE movies (I watched Rock of Ages - best movie I've seen in ages). To tell you how much room I had,  I could stick my legs straight out in front of me and not touch the seat. Also, I had to unbuckle my seat belt to reach stuff under the seat. Honestly.

We land on time in Chicago and it is FREEZING AND COLD AND RAINY. Blech. My flight out? Delayed. Obviously. We left about an hour late. (L's connection was in Midway, also Chicago, and her flight left on time and landed early). So L had to wait for me in Hartford. The car rental facility was off site (of course). By the time we got the car, it was 5:40 pm. We had about a 4 hour drive to Burlington, Vermont, and we still had to stop and get dinner.

Luckily, we found an Applebee's in Massachusetts. They were packed, but we were able to get seated at the bar. I have a cold, so I didn't notice, but L said the food tasted funny. Great. Since L had come straight from work to the airport, she had not slept in some ungodly amount of time. I had the drive to the hotel. Thankfully, it was all interstate, so we didn't get stuck in traffic of any kind. We stopped at ONE Walgreen's just inside the border of Vermont and were able to get our souvenirs (way too easy). We arrived at the super classy Econo Lodge in Shelburne just before 10:00 pm. Not impressed with the weather forecast:

The race was about 30 minutes away, but didn't start until 8:30, so we did not need to get up crazy early. We did, however, have to make sure we were packed and ready to go since we would not have time to shower after the race. Yuck.

Race Day

We got up around 6:15 and left about 20 minutes later. We have gotten really efficient at getting ready after doing this so many times. We stopped and put some gas in on the way to the race. They information we had received warned about parking filling up close to the start/finish area, so we wanted to get there early so we wouldn't risk the "up to one mile away" parking. No time for that. We got the LAST SPOT in the close parking lot. We went inside and got our bibs and pretty cool long sleeve shirts. Nothing to do now but sit around for an hour.

View from the best parking spot - PRETTY trees!
I spent this time looking at the weather. Damn. Cold and SUPER WINDY. Around 7:30 it started raining. THANKFULLY it stopped again after about a half hour. We hit the bathroom lines a couple of times, and headed to the start, getting there ONE MINUTE before it was supposed to start. The race info stated NO early starts allowed and that it would start "at 8:30 sharp." Well. It started about 5 minutes late. Really cutting into our travel time. It was so cold, we both kept our awesome throwaways on. Mine even had a faux fur hood. I hope someone got a picture of it. We kept these on until the first aid station at mile 2. (Edited to include picture of awesome sweater):

The course, as I found out the day before we left (yeah, yeah, I probably should have LOOKED at it), was an out and back along the bay (a bay?). It was VERY windy and very chilly. By the end of the race, L would say that it was our coldest yet.

Anyway, the first 2 miles were on road, and then we moved to a hard dirt packed road. It was pretty hilly, which we expected. Again, we we were NOT prepared for the freezing cold gale force winds.

The course was very pretty, but it was slow going. Well, except for the Vermontians. They were crazy fast. We were back of the pack the entire race. My knee held up mostly ok, but between being extremely fatigued and the cold I had developed on Friday, I was just TIRED. Obviously I knew we didn't have a lot of time to be screwing around, I just couldn't seem to make myself go faster. I'm glad I did not look at my watch during the race because I really felt like I was running harder/faster than I apparently was.

L had custom designed shirts for us and we had TONS of runners and volunteers congratulate us and want to talk to us about our journey. It was pretty neat. There was thankfully a downhill finish, and we crossed the line together for state 50!!

We got our water, grabbed our bags out of the car, got a random kid to take pictures of us with our medals and headed into the school to change. The bathrooms were locked, but we found an unlocked janitor's closet and changed there. (I could not make this stuff up). We left the school at 11:20. We estimated about a four hour drive, and L's flight left first at 5:10.

Thoughts on the race:
  • Plan for cold and wind. It IS October. I don't know if this weather was normal or not, but I'm really glad I had a throwaway. At first I was concerned I hadn't brought capris, but that ended up being ok.
  • Aid stations every 2 miles. Very well stocked with water and Heed. They gave Hammer gels at mile 4.
  • VERY friendly volunteers.
  • Easy and basic pick up (but if you want a close parking spot DO get there early, or you are parking further away and ON the course so it is harder to get out)
  • Inexpensive and still got a unique shirt AND a medal - this was the 42nd annual running of this race, they must be doing something right.
  • VERY VERY pretty scenery. If you can get past the cold and the wind.
  • Would recommend, just maybe make better travel arrangements than I did :D
We got on the road, stressed out. But not too stressed to stop for DUNKIN' DONUTS. You have to understand that we don't have them in Colorado. I got a delicious white chocolate pumpkin and we got a box of donut holes (which included little pumpkin donut holes). Delicious. We figured the sugar would hold us over until we got to Massachusetts, where we were hoping to have time to stop at Five Guys before heading to the airport.

The travel gods were on our side and we got to Five Guys (20 miles from the airport around 2:40) with "plenty" of  time to get burgers and cajun fries. We ate in the car, and dropped off the car around 3:20. PLENTY OF TIME.

Breezed through security... until my bag got flagged for additional inspection. Ha ha, the joke is on you. Go ahead and take out my race clothes. Blech.

Had about 20 minutes until L's flight left (her connection was in Charlotte). My flight left on time, and I was pretty distraught to learn it was almost a 4 hour flight to Dallas. Gross. We watched the Amazing Spider Man, and then... 2 hours still to go. I couldn't sleep. Arrived on time in Dallas. I got some food at Pizza Hut (I eat GREAT when I travel), then found an outlet and watched Netflix until boarding time.

At which time I discover the gate has been moved ALL THE WAY TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TERMINAL. Run over there, only to realize... delayed. OF COURSE. I was already on the latest flight out. That figures. Our 10:25 flight didn't take off until after 11 pm. I think I dozed for about 30 minutes, and we landed (late) at 11:45.

I had to wait 20 minutes for a shuttle to my car and by the time I got home, it was 1:15 am. (Which was GREAT considering I had to get up at 5:45 to shower - remember, I still hadn't showered after the run, and get to work).

LONGEST (yet shortest) weekend ever. Waiting for me when I got home?

Thanks, A!

The Final Week

I can't believe it is almost here. I started this blog to log my journey to complete a half marathon in all the states. On Saturday I head to Hartford (with a LONG drive to Vermont), where L and I will run state #50.

I AM SUPER PSYCHED.

And... also a little... What now??

After, this is all over, expect either:
  1. Lots of blogging about nothing
  2. No blogging about anything
With that said. PEOPLE!! Less than a week left to enter the #RUNALLTHERACES virtual run. According to my Twitter feed, everyone in the world (but me) raced last weekend. Now is a great time to get in on the action, as there are lots of great prizes up for grabs, and not a whole lot of entries. (And only $110 until I meet my fundraising goal!)

And... I only have ONE race report from those that have entered. It's cold and gross here, send me pictures of warm and sunny places, please.

You can enter HERE.

PFTW:

Monday - 2 miles at lunch, Monday night chaos
Tuesday - 4 miles
Wednesday - Cross? (Bike, rowing, weights?)
Thursday - SUPER SECRET
Friday - run at lunch?
Saturday - long travel day
Sunday - STATE #50 (GMAA half marathon in South Hero, VT)

Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Half Marathon (Race Recap)

St. Louis, MO
Sunday, October 23
Half Marathon #47
State #39
Weather - Coolish at start, Warm mid-race and SUNNY

Rock ‘n’ Roll St. Louis, yet another race I registered for in February. I had another night of somehow sleeping fabulously. Woke up at 5:45, got ready, and then headed out to meet up with the Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics for a group picture. We managed to get there in time and without getting lost. Amazing! Didn’t recognize any of them, although I think I am a (bad) Facebook friend with at least one of them. Realize I forgot my gum. Damn. But probably pretty low on the list of things I try to remember to take with me. Forgetting GU or my iPod would have been much more devastating.

Half Fanatics & Marathon Maniacs
Can you believe that sweatshirt on L was a THROW AWAY??
Decided to head over to the bathrooms before the start. The line took forever. Got to the potty about a minute or two before the start, and of course the one that I used was out of toilet paper. Figures. At least it had hand sanitizer. Once again, the corrals were congested and we were not able to enter.

I didn’t especially want to go in the corral I was assigned to – Corral 4. When I registered way back in February, I said I could run in 1:55… Heh. I haven’t run anywhere CLOSE to that since January, when I did run a 1:58:30. Anyway.

By the time we sneaked in, it was already about corral 6 going by, which was an ok pace to be running. We somehow got sandwiched RIGHT BY the 2:00 hour pace group. I don’t like pace groups, nor the crowds that occur as a result. But I also didn’t wan to run faster/slower to get around them. Problem. Anyway, pace is pretty good, but the beginning of the course is tough. LOTS of turns, and it is tough to maneuver. There were turns where we practically had to walk. Immediately the temps started heating up. First to go were the gloves. Balled those suckers up and tossed off course. Might have hit someone. Very shortly after that, the arm sleeves went to - I tie them to my race belt. It was hot, sunny, I was already overheating.

One of the things I really enjoy about RnR races is that there are tons of water stations. I’m a bit bummed that most races seem to be cutting costs and no longer have electrolyte drinks at all the stations. First aid station, only water, feeling good.

Shortly after mile 2, we run into a friend, Lauren, that we met in China. She was running the half, and her boyfriend was running the full. In Corral 2. Yeah, he is pretty bad ass. I could already tell that she was running a pace faster than I felt comfortable running, so I wished her luck and pulled back a bit. (Again, what ARE the odds of finding someone I know on the course… especially with 22,000 runners??)

There's Lauren, in the blue by the center lines... so long!
Didn’t feel the calf tightening like before, so that was good. There were more hills/inclines than I was expecting, so I was instead having tight quads. Nothing unmanageable. The course around mile 3-4 was super hard to run, the road was REALLY torn up and I kept thinking I was going to twist an ankle. I hate having to stare at my feet.

Best aid station was right before mile 5, the local YMCA. They had little kids dressed up like the Village People and their own balloon archway. Rad! Just before mile 6, we spot the random Marathon Maniac that we saw in Bismarck AND on the marathon course in Denver. He was super chatty and pretty much told me every single race he is running between now and April (FYI, a TON). Felt like I slowed down a bit to talk to him (he was having some knee pain), but the split at the water station right afterwards showed we were running a decent pace.

Just past mile 7
Another course where I really don’t remember too much. The miles didn’t really “fly by,” but I was feeling ok, and was pretty distracted. At the GU aid station around mile 7.5 I grabbed a few extra. OK, I took 5 total. My fuel belt isn’t big enough to hold my phone AND that many, and since my skirt didn’t have pockets, I had to shove the excess in my bra. Don’t judge me. And as a result I couldn't get my phone out of my belt, so, no pictures after that aid station (I suck, sorry).

The course split around mile 8, and then I go blank again. Although I vaguely remember running by a park, changing leaves… not too much else. Until a huge hill at mile 8.5ish. Almost forced me to walk. It was huge (or it least it FELT huge). Then aid station at the bottom of the backside of the hill. Nice long decline with about a billion timing mats. WHY?? You might think I was exaggerating, but there were at least 6-8 of them within about a quarter mile. A funny thing off the course… a car trying to exit a driveway of some sort. And there were 2 or 3 cars behind him. And they were all just holding down their horns. I don’t understand this. Where do you think he is going to go? And just from the little time I spent in St. Louis, there was LITERALLY SIGNAGE EVERYWHERE. Your fault for not leaving home early enough.

About mile 10, I notice we are still keeping a pretty awesome pace. I figure “it’s only a 5k left” (Yeah, I just keep telling myself that, even though I know otherwise), and I’ll push as best as I can. Last aid station around mile 11.5, and very shortly after that, a beer table!! L and I each took a cup, thanks!

Pretty decent sized uphill the last ¾ of a mile or so of the course and like other RnR courses, the LONGEST CHUTE EVER. L did run ahead of me in the chute, I don’t blame her. By the end I could barely move. Crossed the line and my legs almost gave out on me. But!!! Another really good time!

Man, this is a BAD picture...

Of note. Didn’t have to use the bathroom during the race. Again. I think this is 4 in a row!

Got my medal, bottle of water, and a banana. Quick finisher picture, then we headed back to the hotel to shower and check out. We figured we had about an hour to see the RnR band, Sugar Ray, so we walked BACK to the race (about a mile away). We stopped at a booth, where I got this - check out their website:

Isn’t it awesome?? Of course it will stay in the packaging until I have actually DONE all 50… Then we watched the band, Sugar Ray. I gotta say, he still looks pretty good, and they sounded good live.

Sugar Ray!!
We only had a chance to stay for about 5 songs, then we headed back to the garage to get the car.

Not sure what this is...
Best view of the city - The Gateway Arch and changing leaves

Get to the parking garage and notice that there are about a billion people in line for the exit. I jokingly say it looks like it’s going to take a half hour to get out. This was no joke. With about 20-25 cars in front of us, I am NOT joking when I say that it took 45 minutes to get out. FORTY.FIVE.MINUTES. People were getting out of their cars, and after 40 minutes, I’ll admit I got out too (we had moved in 40 minutes about 8 car lengths). We had a 2:25 flight, it was already almost 1:00, and we were still 20 minutes from the place we had to drop off the car, take a shuttle, get to the airport, check in, go through security, use the bathroom, lunch.

I’ll admit. I snapped. The guy claims the gate is broken. I want to know a). why they have a system that is so old/stupid that there is no way to manually override it so PEOPLE CAN GET OUT, and b). who was going to pay for my flight change if I missed it.  Literally the line started to move right then. I’d like to pretend it was because of me.

FINALLY get out at 12:53… Cutting it close. The guy at the gate had the nerve to small talk with us, wanting to know how our race went. Really? Get us the heck out of here. At least the $18 parking fee was waived…

We still have to stop and put gas in the car, but luckily there is a gas station a half block away from the rental car return. You can imagine that the man we returned the car to was the SLOWEST MOVING HUMAN ON EARTH. Finally board the shuttle at 1:16… an hour until the flight leaves.

Go inside and luckily no wait at the kiosk, get the boarding pass and then book it through the airport to get to security. Which is… you guessed it, moving SUPER SLOW. Takes another 15-20 to get through security. Seriously, who ARE these people who don’t know to take off their belts and take the change out of their pockets? Security has had the same rules for like 10 years now.

Anyway. Finally get to the gate, use the bathroom. 30 minutes or so until departure. Phew. Only place to eat is Quiznos. There are about 6 people in front of me. Did you know that Quizonos employ the OTHER SLOWEST HUMANS ON EARTH??? 21 minutes for 2 subs. Seriously. Only 6 people in front. Only people to board behind us were the other idiots who thought Quiznos would be a fast lunch. Flight is fine, arrive without freaking out.

Sigh. What a stressful trip.

Overall about the race/St. Louis

  • Driving in St. Louis is SUPER stressful. Allow LOTS of extra time. With that said. Running St. Louis was actually pretty fabulous...
  • The course is pretty good, but obviously very congested, especially in the first 8 miles before the marathoners split
  • LOTS of great crowd support
