Freeze Your Cookies Off #3 (Race Recap)

Monday, February 20
Denver, CO
Half Marathon #161
Weather - Sunny and warm

When we were trying to schedule the final installment of FYCO, we were having a tough time finding a third date that worked for the organizers AND fell within the cookie sale dates. We chose President's Day, thinking that we may have a fairly decent turnout with people who had the day off. It ended up being our smallest race of the series, with only 14 runners completing the full distance. We decided to start the race at 10, and when I saw the forecast I was pretty pleased with that decision. The weather cooperated for a third time and we had sun and warm weather. Daniel, the timer, and Bill were not able to attend the event at all, so Stacy offered to run early so that she could do timing and assist A while I ran.

I had mentioned to A a half dozen times, "how on earth am I even going to be able to run?" I was so sore from Moab that I was thinking I was going to be the last one across the line because I was going to need to walk so much.

A and I arrived at the start around 9:15, with Stacy already set up. We unloaded the cookies and started checking in the runners. Used the bathroom once with about 10 minutes until the start. Heather decided that she would run with me, even though I warned her I was hurting and planned on LOTS of walking.

We started right at 10 and headed out on the Highline Canal. I gotta say, after running this section three times in as many weeks, I will likely NOT rush out to run there any time soon.Sure enough, I had to walk pretty early on. My legs were so tight and sore and fatigued. The first two miles were definitely the most horrible.

Such a clear day and what blue skies we had!
We were the very last runners on the course until we passed Yuly about a half mile before the turnaround. One of the runners who had done the early start with Stacy had offered to volunteer at the turnaround, which was SO appreciated, especially since I had completely drained my handheld.
Can you believe this picture has no filter??
THANKFULLY, although we were moving slow, I felt a lot better on the way back and did not have to take as many walk breaks.

Our friend and teammate, Nikki, came out on the course and got a few pictures from us a few minutes from the finish line. I feel like we look happier than we feel?
A got a good picture of us running into the finish.
Other than a woman who started late and one of our friends that was running 16, we were the last ones done. It was so much warmer than I had planned on and of course I was still really tired after Moab. Black was also not the best choice for a shirt color.

Garmin time - 2:48:42
Garmin distance - 13.35 miles
Mile 1- 11:57
Mile 2 - 12:47
Mile 3 - 14:13
Mile 4 - 12:36
Mile 5 - 11:50
Mile 6 - 12:12
Mile 7 - 15:33
Mile 8 - 13:29
Mile 9 - 12:13
Mile 10 - 13:01
Mile 11 - 11:50
Mile 12 - 11:37
Mile 13 - 11:44
Mile 13.35 - 10:31

We sat around waiting for everyone to come in - HAVE I MENTIONED HOW MUCH I LIKE TO SIT??? I didn't take my race medal or series award (a pink unicorn!) because they had to go to the other runners first
When you know the race director, you have to take a selfie together
Thoughts:
  • It's not the best idea to "race" a half marathon so soon after a challenging trail race. This hurt. A lot.
  • Organizing a race, even a small "grassroots" race is a LOT of work. We still have to have a meeting to tie up all the loose ends and get our checks written for the various charities that we are donating to.
  • The running community is really the greatest. There were so many people that ran, volunteered, shared our event... it really helped make everything a success. Maybe we will do this again next year - on a MUCH smaller scale.

Week in Review (February 14-February 20)

Tuesday (10,441 steps) - Early to school for student council. Barre class with Laura during lunch. It was a strange vibe, she was being evaluated and had to keep the volume down really low with the music. NOT a fun way to go through class, plus, wasn't crazy about the music to begin with. Gymnastics, picked up more cookies/dropped off money and then on to Torchy's for dinner. We got it to go (green chili queso and tacos) and ate at home while watching "Up," because I've never seen it. What a depressing movie. Oh, and I still hate Valentine's Day.
Wednesday (17,501 steps) - Run club after work. Weather was pretty nice and we decided to actually run what everyone else was (normally we do our own 3ish mile loops). This was a 5K loop that had been set up for the Colfax pancake run over the weekend. Colfax stopped to use the bathroom a HUNDRED MILLION TIMES on this run. A managed to sell a few more boxes of cookies at the store. Hooray!
Thursday (23,365 steps) - Barre with a new instructor in the morning. I didn't love a lot of what she did. There was some weird stuff we had to do with our backs to the barre that I wasn't crazy about. A and I had decided that we were going to meet up with Runners Edge for a special night trail run instead of going to Belmar. We found the lot without much trouble. Used the bathroom and waited for people to show up - turns out there were only like 7 of us.
I of course was the slowest and we got behind pretty early. I even tripped over a root and fell. We completely lost them all with about a half mile to go. We ended up going the wrong direction, got turned around, ended up on trails that weren't really trails. A freaked out a bit because there were some weird people out that were making scary noises, plus she thought we were lost. We were supposed to run about 3 and ended up doing over 4. Went to Rocko's and met up with everyone. Had to make more medals for the last FYCO race, and then pack.
Friday (17,046 steps) - Headed out to Moab and hiked. Recapped here.
Saturday (47,384 steps) - Moab Red Hot 33K
Sunday (20,749 steps) - Hiking at Fisher Towers and driving back, recapped here.

When we got back into town we had to stop at the grocery store. Once we got home I made dinner, actually, dinner times two. Spaghetti and then chimichangas for another night. Also had to do laundry and get everything ready for the last FYCO race. Need a vacation from my vacation!
Monday (35,821 steps) - Alarm was set for 7:30 for FYCO. I woke up a few minutes before the alarm went off. Got everything loaded up and headed down around 8:15. With it being Presidents Day I was pretty sure traffic would be light, and it was.
After the race was over, we went to lunch at Chili's with Heather. Home for showers and cookie inventory. I convinced A to go selling door to door for an hour or so because the weather was so nice, but she only managed to offload a half dozen boxes. We had a cookie booth with Rose and Madi until 8, and then dinner and TV. In bed early.

Stats:
  • 172,307 steps
  • 40 miles run
  • 2 barre classes, 9.3 miles of hiking
  • Current weight - 126.8 - don't even want to talk about it.
Everything Else:
  • This long weekend was my last one until MEMORIAL DAY. How will I make it 3.5 months???
  • So relieved to be done with the FYCO series. That was a LOT of work.
  • Oh, and cookies.

Week in Review (February 6 - February 13)

Tuesday (12,767 steps) - Even though we had a super late night getting back from California, we had to get up extra early because A had student council. I had to skip barre because I had a meeting (with pizza) during lunch. A had gymnastics after school and we stopped by Jan's house to pick up more cookies and drop off money. Watched Quantico and did a load of laundry.
Wednesday (19,788 steps) - I had briefly thought about going to an early barre class but chose sleep instead. Run club at the Denver store after work. The temperatures were really mild and I ran 3.5 miles with Heather, A and Colfax. Grocery shopping on the way home, had to make more medals for the next FYCO race and dinner. One episode of Law & Order and then cookie organizing and another load of laundry. Up until 11. This has to stop!!
Thursday (18,200 steps) - For the first time (I think), since I've had my current job (2+ years), I didn't straighten my hair. It was kind of relaxing to just take a shower, put my hair in a ponytail and go. I'm hoping that if I do this for a few weeks maybe I can restore some "strength" to my hair, it's crazy damaged. Since I didn't go on Tuesday, I went to barre at lunch with Laura. Very small class, only three people! As usual, super challenging. Run club at Belmar after work. A wanted to walk again so it was just me and Colfax. Super warm evening, I got toasty in a thin long sleeve shirt.
Full moon!
I wanted to run on some of the trails, but we ended up on a horse trail that was super muddy, so we moved back onto the sidewalk. Rocko's after and we actually managed to get home shortly after 8. TV and more laundry, still in bed late. Arg.
Friday (18,331 steps) - A had a cookie booth right after school so her leader picked her up and took her over. I wasn't able to get out of work early, so they were pretty much done by the time I picked her up. I then drove her over to a friend's house for a birthday party. I went home and made spaghetti and walked on the treadmill until it was time to pick her up.
Saturday (25,382 steps) - Headed over to Runners Roost in Lakewood for Runner's Edge. Both of us were pretty tired so we opted to only do 6 miles. I'm always surprised by how hilly it seems in Lakewood

We stuck around until 10:15 because 1). we were responsible for the aid station and had to wait for all the keys to get picked up and 2). A was selling some Girl Scout cookies. We then hauled ass to get to barre for a special "mornings are for mimosas" class with Laura. Super challenging. We did indeed have mimosas (and mini muffins) and I bought A a clearance bra. Rushed home for showers and a quick lunch of leftover spaghetti, shopped at Jessa's work to drop off cookies and then off to another cookie booth.
When some weird guy just hands you his dogs when he goes into the store...
Then we picked up Lisa downtown so we could go to stout month at Vine Street. The line was a little long but we got a beer and found a bench to sit on until we could get a table. I had a delicious grilled cheese and a few tasty beers.
Home after 8.
Sunday (35,708 steps) - FYCO #2.
The last runners were done by about 3:45. We went with Maureen to Noodles for a late lunch/early dinner and then ANOTHER COOKIE BOOTH. This one got done at 8:00, so it was another late night. Unfortunately, we had to be at the booth outside because of the giant Valentine's Day displays in the lobby. I hate being cold. Watched the Walking Dead.
Monday (13,915 steps) - Another cookie booth after work. Another late night of having dinner, close to 9:00. Stayed up too late. Again.

Stats:
  • 144,091 steps
  • 25.9 miles run
  • 2 barre classes
  • Current weight - 125.8. Blarg. I've become so lax in eating, and maybe I'm finally hitting that "old age" where my metabolism stops altogether. Hard to say since I'm obviously not running as much as I have in the past. Anyway.
Everything Else
  • I had a phone interview a few weeks ago, with the hope I would get an in-person interview. Sadly, no luck for now. Although, I am hesitant to say that now that I have moved to the other side of the cube, it's not as terrible? I just put in my headphones and ignore everyone.
  • Cookie booths, cookie booths, cookie booths.

Freeze Your Cookies Off #2 (Race Recap)

Sunday, February 12
Denver, CO
Half Marathon #160
Weather - Overcast, a little cold

After the first FYCO race we figured we didn't need to arrive quite so early. We still had to stop at Joann on the way to pick up more ribbon, but we were the first to arrive again, maybe around 10:45. We entered the same lot that we had used the first time and unloaded everything, only to have someone from the church inform us that we couldn't park in the lot. There were plenty of other spots in the main lot, so we just directed everyone there instead. Thankfully, that was the only glitch in our day.

People seemed to recognize that checking in and picking out their cookies only took a few minutes so it seemed the bulk of the people arrived with 15 or so minutes until the start.

One of the runners asked in advance if people would be willing to wear hearts in support of Jackson, a little boy that needs heart surgery. Of course everyone was happy to show their support!
I headed to the bathroom with about 10 minutes to go, made a last minute call for people to check in and before I knew it, time for the pre-race picture (our biggest race of the series!)

We started a minute or two late and again, I was in the back with Colfax. Heather planned on running faster so it was just us.

During the first mile I was concerned that my legs would be too tired to run well, but things actually went pretty well during the first half. I kinda wished I had brought music with me, I didn't know in advance I would be running alone.

We had rain/snow in the forecast the night before, but luckily it did not amount to anything and the trails were in PERFECT condition. I didn't find a single spot that was icy, muddy, or even wet. Hurray!
Gloomy like this pretty much the whole day
I dropped Colfax off with Maureen, who had gotten Eric to volunteer with her at the turnaround and headed back.
Melissa got this shot of me and Colfax
I felt fine until maybe mile 9 or 10 and then I really started feeling fatigued and took a lot more walk breaks. The only "goal" I had was to break 2:40 (which on a course that is a .25 mile long is pretty "decent" considering my pace the last few years). Somewhere around mile 11 I took a drink out of my handheld and forgot to close the top and all my Nuun spilled out, so that was pretty annoying and I of course became the thirstiest ever.

It took everything in me to run to the finish - this picture actually makes it look like I have some energy left, lol.
Not quite as many people stuck around at the finish, but it was also about 20 degrees colder than the first race, so not entirely unexpected.
We did these fun finish lines so people felt like they were "breaking the tape"
I ate the donut that A had saved for me and we cheered in the remaining runners.
Colfax got a medal for running the first half in two races - he looks pleased!
No wonder people were asking me which one of us is taller... (the back of my medal is customized with "Best Mom")

Week in Review (January 24 - January 30)

Tuesday (13,728 steps) - I had set my alarm thinking I might get up and run my neighborhood loop and then decided to go back to sleep. Hustled to get out the door at 7:45 so I could get my depo shot. They were super quick and we were out of there by 8:00 and A was actually at school earlier than a normal day. Laura's barre class at noon. After work I picked A up and took her to gymnastics. She had a pretty intense class again, only this time she left in tears. They were working on wall handstands and she was upset that she couldn't stay up for the full 45 seconds. Quick dinner and watched Quantico, did laundry, in bed by 10.
Wednesday (17,427 steps) - 6 am barre class with Sarah. She hasn't taught in a while, but thanks to two full time instructors leaving, she is on the hook for the morning classes. The thigh series was good, but man, I really hated the glut series under the barre. Not my favorite. I left with a twinge in my left leg, not good. Run club after work. Heather was a no-show so I ran with Colfax and Francesca, and it was NOT THE BEST. We also found out that it was Joe's last night - turns out he got a job offer to work at Nike! The only good part about that is that Phil will be in charge again (if only for a little while).
Thursday (15,402 steps) - Skipped barre in the morning since I was still feeling a bit off. Went to Belmar run club after work and it was SUPER DUPER COLD. Colfax and I ran random trails again and it was nice to get back to the store. Rocko's and then home.
Friday (14,207 steps) - I have no recollection of what we did. At all. Strava says I walked on the treadmill at home and watched House of Cards for 2.5 miles.
Saturday (26,487 steps) - Up early for Runner's Edge. We shadowed again for aid station set-up, but since the route was just on Ralston Creek in Arvada, we weren't up super early. Ariel and I had compromised on running 7 miles, but once we got to the turnaround she decided to just go for 8. It was about 15 degrees colder than what the forecast had predicted and I was very chilly the first few miles.

When we finished our run we had breakfast at Einstein's. Drove over to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge to work on a project for Scouts. We went to the visitor center and then did the 11 mile wildlife drive, which was really cool!

Headed home for showers and some TV. We watched a documentary, Minimalism, and A was totally inspired to get rid of a bunch of junk. After we finished we both cleaned out our closets.
Around 3:30 we went over to Mountain Toad brewery for Happy Trails. I did not want to run, but we chatted with Kim and the Altra rep and had beer. Just before 6, we left to go to the Runner's Edge party at the Tavern. Super fun night there as well, we sat with Doug and his wife before heading out at 8 to pick up Girl Scout cookies. Good lord.
That's 27 cases (324 boxes) that fit in the back of Bee Rad
Sunday (36,911 steps) - Couldn't sleep in. Dang it. After breakfast we stopped at King Soopers to pick up some donuts and then JoAnn to buy more ribbon for the medals. FYCO.
After the race we went to Patxi's with Bill, his wife, Daniel and Mo for the most delicious pizza EVER. Home for a shower and an attempt at relaxing.
Monday (12,923 steps) - Jackie's Happy Hour for her retirement was late in the afternoon. Such a bummer that she is leaving! Picked up A at school and then we came back down to Denver for a barre class with Jen. By the time we got home it was after 8:00.

Stats:
  • 137,805 steps
  • 27.1 miles run
  • 3 barre classes
Everything Else:
  • In a few days about 1/4 of our office is leaving to go to another firm. Sadly, not a department that I work for. It will be weird to have the whole south side of the suite empty.
  • Bah. Cookies.

Freeze Your Cookies Off #1 (Race Recap)

Sunday, January 29
Denver, CO
Half marathon #158
Weather - Warm, sunny

Months ago, a few of us brainstormed and came up with the "Freeze Your Cookies Off" race series. A grassroots half marathon series to 1). get some longer miles in during winter months and 2). to help A offload more Girl Scout cookies (by including two boxes with each registration).

We had the assistance of race director Bill Morton (who organizes Runs With Scissors that I ran in 2014), Daniel (who did the timing) and Ang and Maureen for volunteers. Months of planning and emailing and messaging and finally, the day was here for the first race in the series!

We were "blessed" to have some warmer weather, and it is CRAZY to be running in short sleeves and a tee in January and still feel warm. Anyway, we had planned on the races all starting at noon, because we were expecting colder temperatures, and wanted to give people the chance to go to church first.

We arrived at the start area at 10:30, which was plenty of time to set up a canopy and table and and wait for people to arrive. Bill had secured a private parking lot at the church which would prevent us from having to run across the parking lot to get to the trail, PLUS, we were given permission to use the bathrooms inside.

The first runner arrived around 11 and we started the process of checking in and handing out cookies. While I have assisted with registration and check in before, definitely a new respect for it when there are only two of you, even though the race was super small (I think we had about 20 runners). We sent the volunteers (Mo and Ang) to the aid station at the turnaround and it was decided that I would run with Colfax for the first half of the race.

Just before the race started we took a group picture, which was fun, and right at noon we headed out to the trail. The Highline Canal is a 70ish mile long dirt multi-use trail that I have run a handful of times in the past. Heather, Colfax and I headed out for what I hoped would be a nice, long run.
The trail was unfortunately a lot more icy than I expected. Even with it being almost 60 degrees, there were areas that were shaded enough that it was crazy icy - and with it being warmer, the areas where the sun was hitting was melting that ice and making it muddy.

We stopped about a half hour in to give Colfax some water. I could tell it was going to be a long day. The first runner, Brandon (the local Hoka rep) was the first runner we saw coming back, when we were about 4.5 miles out. When we got closer to maybe 6 miles, we saw a group of runners who told us the volunteers were not at the turn around. WHAT. OH SHIT. I immediately call them and they say that they ARE set up at the Highline and Orchard. And yet every single person coming back said no one was there. Luckily I had an extra water bottle on me and I was able to fill some people's bottles and had some snacks on me... I called Ang back and she said, no, we are set up on Highline and Orchard. WHAT.

Turns out (which I didn't know, and SHOULD have known), that there are THREE places where Orchard and the Highline Canal cross. Damn it!!!!! Luckily, I was able to ping our location to Maureen and Ang and they packed up and met up with us at the correct spot so I could hand off Colfax. There were still a handful of runners out that were able to get the aid they needed, but I was HORRIFIED that this had happened. Maureen and Ang were also super upset and once we confirmed the last runner was headed their way they packed up and did an impromptu aid station a few miles from the finish.
Due to the aid station fiasco, we had a mile that took us almost a half hour and our 3ish hour finish time was very unimpressive. Most of the runners were still hanging around at the finish and thankfully, they were all very understanding about the situation. I was apologizing right and left, but everyone assured me that they were fine. Ugh. At least for the next one, we know for sure the right place to go, and we have secured a traffic cone for a turnaround so no one runs long.

Definitely a learning experience!

Garmin time - 3:02:56
Official time - 3:02:52
Garmin distance - 13.34 miles (we knew it would be long, simply because of where the aid station would have to be placed)
Mile 1 - 11:55
Mile 2 - 12:54
Mile 3 - 12:25
Mile 4 - 11:42
Mile 5 - 12:46
Mile 6 - 12:21
Mile 7 - 27:44 (aid station nonsense)
Mile 8 - 12:31
Mile 9 - 12:27
Mile 10 - 12:19
Mile 11 - 12:48
Mile 12 - 13:41
Mile 13 - 13:05
Mile 13.34 - 12:35
This is what the "medal" looked like
Thoughts:
  • I've been super unmotivated ever since I got back from Arizona. I had not run longer than 7-8 miles all month, and it showed. I had barely been running ANYTHING. So distance-wise, this was tough. I'm also used to running in early morning or at sunset, and it's been on average about 40 degrees cooler. So the temps were warmer than I'm used to.
  • I am still bummed about the aid station not being where it should have been. I can't really blame it on anyone, we should have gone out and marked it or something - chalk it up to being SUPER inexperienced.
  • Our entry fee was $18. That included snacks/drinks at the start (and aid station for those that were able to get to it), 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies per person and a handmade medal. All proceeds from this first event are being donated to Girls on the Run.

Week in Review (January 17 - January 23)

Tuesday (16,302 steps) - Barre class with Laura during lunch. Another intense and challenging class, I was even a bit shaky when I headed back to work. I dropped A off at gymnastics and ran to the grocery store because she has another cold and we are out of Emergen-C and medicine. Made chimichangas for dinner. A went to bed early, I stayed up a bit too late watching Conviction.
Wednesday (19,478 steps) - 6 am barre class with Andrea. Whole class we used the rubber hoops and it was freaking hard. Picked A up at school and then after work we went down to Denver for run club. It had been so warm during that day that I only wore a short sleeve shirt and my Roost team jacket. It was freaking cold and the roads were SUPER icy.
Colfax had stepped on a cactus earlier in the week, so he didn't run with me. Instead, Ariel, Heather and Tony and I did the bigger Belcaro loop. Leftovers for dinner and A went to bed early again, and this time, so did I.
Thursday (16,026 steps) - Another 6 am barre class with Andrea. Instead of the rubber loop things, we used the ball the whole class. Just as freaking hard. Glad it is my last class until Sunday. Hit 15 classes for the month, only need 5 more for the challenge! Picked A up at school again and after work we drove over to Belmar for run club. Again, it had been warm during the day. Happy I was a non-believer and I wore warmer clothes. A opted to walk with Mo and Colfax, and I ran a small loop with Heather and Eric. We finally earned our club shirts, and went to Rocko's after.

Home a bit late, barely time for a half hour of Forensic Files before bed.
Friday (steps) - Sleeping in! Well, sad that 7 am is sleeping in, but it's a lot later than when I have to get up to go to barre. Work was super slow. Picked up A a bit earlier than usual so I could take her to a sleepover for Girl Scouts. Actually went to bed pretty early, even though I was home alone.
Saturday (steps) - Had to pick A up at the Scouts sleepover by 6:30 so that we could meet someone at one of the Runners Edge aid stations. We actually made really good time until the gps sent us on a weird wild goose chase. We were thankfully only a few minutes late. (If I didn't already say it, I will be manning an aid station for Runners Edge of the Rockies this year so I can train for free). We then drove over to Runners Roost Denver, where we would start our run. A and I ran with the 4:15 pace group (because of a lack of pacers, the 4:10 and 4:20 pace groups were combined) for a few miles until we had to slow the pace a bit. A and I ran EIGHT miles, which is A's longest training run ever and my longest run of the year.

We hung around the store for a bit before going to Nothing Bundt Cakes on our way out. Made a quick trip the grocery store and then we made the remainder of the medals and series awards for the FYCO race series before A's friend Rachelle arrived for a sleepover.
I took them to the rec center - they swam and I watched House of Cards. They got bored after about an hour so we went home - they showered and I made some pizza. The girls were goofing off in A's room and I was watching TV downstairs until about 10 when I went to bed.
Sunday (steps) - I was woken up around 4:45 in the morning because Rachelle wasn't feeling well. Feverish, headache and stomach ache. She called her mom, who told her to go back to sleep. What. I eventually went back to sleep as well, after situating Rachelle on the couch downstairs. I was woken up a second time around 8 because she was now puking. I texted her mom, but didn't hear back for over an hour. And another hour before she came to pick her up. After Rachelle left we did laundry and had breakfast. Around 1 I went for a run.

I was hoping that it had been cold enough to harden the dirt at the lake, but it was muddy. I ended up cutting that section short and looped through the neighborhoods for about 4 miles. The weather was pretty perfect and I didn't feel like crap. We went to Barnes & Noble to spend her gift card and then went to Jo-Ann to spend her OTHER gift card. I had a barre class at 4:15, homework, dinner, TV, bed.
Monday (steps) - Actually got up and went for a run before work for the first time in ages. I had hoped for 3 but felt pretty good so went for 4. Slowish, but no unplanned walk breaks, hurray!
A had Scouts, where we got the latest information on cookie sales and then we went to Target. Stocked up on all the staples (toilet paper, toothpaste), etc. Went home for dinner and TV. Also finally updated my calendars, I *will* get organized this year if it kills me.

Stats:
  • 135,816 steps
  • 21.9 miles run
  • 4 barre classes, some walking
  • Current weight - 125. Almost a pound down from where I was, but still about 5 pounds from my normal "comfortable" weight. Boo, hiss.
Everything Else:

  • Found out that about a third of our firm is leaving to go to another law firm on the other side of the city. Supposedly it will not have an impact on our current firm, yet there have been a LOT of closed doors and meetings.
  • I hate being fat, I hate not feeling like I can eat what I want.
  • Finally seem to be out of my "slump" and I actually ran a fairly solid (although low mileage) week. Need to get back into "training" if I want to have a strong season.
