Week in Review (August 9 - August 16)

Tuesday (14,980 steps) -  Work in the office. Went for a walk at lunch and then after work I made a quick stop at Ulta. I haven't bought any real makeup in probably 3-4 years, thanks to Covid. I finally got a good foundation that has SPF in it, surprised at the number of them that do not have it! Then I went to Green Mountain to meet Mo for run club.
I love the Low Tide Rabbit tops! So fun, and they don't look like running clothes
The run was a bit tough, I am definitely still in recovery mode. It "helped" that it was a down week for Mo and that Colfax wasn't supposed to be running, so he was being pushed in his stroller. Opted to skip the beer and have a seltzer instead.
Leftovers for dinner and TV, since A was working.
Wednesday (6,821 steps) - Peloton ride and full body strength training before going to work in the office.
Went for a walk at lunch. Pretty sure I had leftovers again for dinner, and must've watched something on TV, but I don't remember. Tyler stopped by briefly to pick up the battery he loaned me MANY months ago.
Thursday (22,753 steps) - Up early for... a track workout :(
I have not missed doing speed work AT ALL. I needed to get in a warm up and 4x800 with 800 rest in between, and I didn't think I had enough time to go all the way to the nice track, so I ran from the house to the dirt track at the middle school. I don't even like speedwork when I'm feeling "ok" so I was dreading this. The warmup was pretty awful, but by the time I got to the intervals they were "not bad" and I actually managed to get faster with each one.

Pretty sunrise!

I fully recognize that those 800 paces used to be paces I could maintain during a half marathon, but I'm obviously not at that fitness level anymore.
Had about an 80 minute counseling session online, then went to 4 Noses with Ben. Pizza for dinner.
Friday (9,129 steps) - FRIDAY. Wash Park and coffee with the gang. New latte flavor, which was exciting - plus, how can you go wrong with whipped cream?
Work was CRAZY busy. Finally at lunch I got enough nerve to talk to Nicole about my new desk assignments. She thankfully was really understanding and is not going to make me continue with it, so back to my regular peeps. Woo. Managed a cute (weird?) selfie with both kitties.
Saturday (32,357 steps) - Up early to meet up with Runners Edge! I had two hours on schedule, with the goal to remain in zones 1 and 2, with a few 3-5 minute long pickups. Well I wasn't sure how slow I would have to run to keep my heartrate that low, but I figured I'd just do 10.
The route was not one that I had done before and I was really appreciative of the amount of shade! There was, unfortunately, only one aid station (I must've misunderstood where the second one was?) - so from 2ish to 8ish miles I didn't have anything. I definitely had to run slower than I would have liked, but managed to stay in the lower HR zones for all but maybe 10 minutes, so success! Stayed at Panera to chat with Ted and Jim for a bit before heading home to shower.

Took Pika for a walk, then Ariel and I drove up to Silverthorne. Actually, A did her first "mountain" driving and drove to Georgetown, then I drove the rest of the way. We were able to check into our hotel a bit early, then we still had to get ready for Paula and Jon's wedding. We were out the door on time and found the venue without difficulty. Their wedding was really cute and they got married on the green - and luckily the weather held out. Plus, look how nice we looked!

I kept my phone in my purse most of the night, so really only took pictures of this one cupcake, and the picture below that I stole from one of the other people that took it, haha.

Ariel and I are the only ones that don't have the purple Selk bags!
Ruth, Erica, Ang, Annette, Paula, A, me, Mo and Lisa
We left the venue around 9:40 and A drove us back to our hotel. Watched some Law & Order SVU, but went to bed pretty soon after that.
Sunday (3,791 steps) - Unfortunately, we didn't have a do not disturb sign for our room and we got a few knocks on our door before 8 am. We finally dragged ourselves out of bed because we were hungry. We went to a cafe down the street - it was delicious.
Went to Dunkin for some coffee and then a stop at the Crocs store so A could show me the color she wants for her next pair. Then, up to Frisco for a stop at Outer Range!
We met Greg there and played the "how many countries of the world can you name" game. He is the smartest person I know and was able to get 166! (I got half that). We headed out at 12:30, but it was already too late. It took over 3 hours to get home (it's normally about 80 minutes). It also rained a lot of the drive, so I did the whole drive instead of switching out with Ariel.

Went with Ben to Costco to put gas in my car, then up to 4 Noses for a beer. Evening was spent watching TV and having burgers for dinner.
Monday (18,200 steps) - Work from home! Took Pika for a short walk, early, then up to Eldorado for a hike at lunch. I got partway there before I remembered that my parking pass is tied to my old car, not my new one, so I had to stop by A's work to switch cars. I had decided to go at lunch since it was supposed to rain in the afternoon.

I haven't done any trails since Fat Dog, and I was quickly tired and out of breath. I was watching the skies, I didn't want to get caught in weather (and neither did Blue-C).
The first few miles were WARM. A group of guys coming down warned me there was a rattlesnake off the trail, but I thankfully never saw it. It was really green on the trail, which surprised me with how warm it's been. Finally I was heading down and I had to start running a bit since the sky was getting mildly scary.
Started lightly raining on me with maybe 3/4 of a mile to go. I got out of there pretty quick, but it was raining pretty hard most of the drive. Switched cars with A, then finished out my day at home. I had A bring me a few tacos for a late lunch. We found a movie to watch, then had frozen pizza for dinner. I stayed up a bit watching Snapped, and A went to a friend's house for her last night of summer. I think I was in bed by 9, which was glorious.

Elephant Mountain 50K (Race Recap)

Cave Creek, AZ
Saturday, February 5
Ultra Marathon #38
Weather - Chilly at the start, sunny and warm

With my scary 2022 racing season looming, I was on the hunt for a "short" race to ease into all the trail running. I landed on Arizona after checking out possibilities in Texas and a few other "warmer" states. After the cold snap we had recently had in Denver we were both looking forward to dry trails - recognizing that this would be good prep for our upcoming events.

Race Day

I had not slept well the night before. With all the hotel drama we hadn't picked up anything for breakfast. We were staying in a resort type place that didn't have anything for us. We got out the door as planned, but we still needed to get breakfast somewhere. I was NOT optimistic as we were driving to the start as we seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. "Luckily" there was a Starbucks that was open and we got some breakfast sandwiches and coffee.

Thankfully, we found the start without any issues. I'm always a bit worried when there is no physical address for a start. Since we were using a tiny car, we were able to squeeze into a spot in the main lot. We used the extra time to cycle through the bathroom line, pick up our bib, and get everything ready to go for the 7 am start.
Announcements started with a few minutes to go. We were reminded about the flagging and signage we needed to look for, and we lined up to go. We started right on time, with Ben going out with a front group and me taking my place in the back where I am comfortable. After taking a full week off from running because of my foot pain, I was pretty anxious with how this was going to go.

The first mile went ok. It was a gradual uphill and not overly technical. I ran some of the less steep grades and hiked the rest. My hands were pretty cold in that first mile and I was mildly regretting that I had left my gloves in the back of my back. They warmed up pretty quick, so it ended up not being a problem.

We headed up some switchbacks to the top and then we had some really nice rolling hills. However, my foot was acting up. It was definitely more painful than I would have hoped and I spent a LOT of the early miles wondering how stupid it was of me to be out there.

I passed some people in this section, until we got to a weird intersection where I had to look at the map because it was confusing. First aid station I just grabbed some fruit snacks and headed right out. We had to cross a dried out river bed a few times and then we had a short section of pavement before running on some pretty tame single track. I actually really liked this section, except this is about the time that the faster 35K people started to catch up and it was/is kind of annoying moving out of the way of people. Hit the next aid station and grabbed a cup of Mountain Dew and a pickle. Found out it was 5 miles to the next aid station. Foot hurts.

Kept going, a decent amount of hiking in this section. It was really pretty rocky here and between trying to not land weird on my foot and trying to not roll my ankle (which I have been doing a LOT of lately), things were slow-going and not a lot of fun. I saw Ben earlier (?) than I thought I would and let him know that if things didn't improve that I would have to entertain dropping. He talked me into taking some ibuprofen. I got to the aid station, grabbed more Mountain Dew and a small piece of potato, but nothing else sounded good. Headed back out for a lonely 5 miles. I put in one ear bud when I was about 3 hours in. That helped take my mind off things for a bit.

Considering how much my foot was hurting I was actually moving pretty well. I managed to keep my arm sleeves on through the next aid station - definitely longer than I thought I would. It was getting hot out and I was not looking forward to being out on the course. Even though this whole part was an out and back I didn't remember a lot of it. I actually passed a couple people in this section before the next aid station - the second to last one. I got there and there wasn't a ton of food options, but I had expected that. I filled up my bottles and begrudgingly head out for the approximately 5 miles back to the start/finish - but not to actually finish! We would have to use the finish line as an aid station and then head out after that for a 7 mile loop.

For some reason I thought that I had already done most of the climbing, so in my mind, I thought it was going to just be a lot of downhill to the finish. Sadly, I was wrong. Once I turned onto the Go John Trail it seemed like it went up and up and up. It was still pretty rocky, and fairly steep in some areas. Being later in the day there were also lots of people out - both on bikes and hiking in groups. FINALLY, there was a fairly non-technical downhill for maybe the last few miles. It was going to be nice to actually have a downhill finish. I was not happy having to come through the finish line and not be done. At least Ben hadn't lapped me.

Filled up my bottles and grabbed a (disgusting) peanut butter & jelly since that was the only "real" food left. I only managed a few bites before I just couldn't eat more. I really really really wish aid stations would find something else to feed runners besides pb&j. At least for the last part of the route I knew what I had coming up - and that was a big climb to the top, some runnable parts, the big climb after the aid station (that we would not be hitting, since it wasn't on the loop) and then downhill to the finish.

While my foot was actually feeling ok by this point, now the bottoms of my feet and my big toes were in excruciating pain any time I tried to run. So that was really frustrating since my legs actually were ok, and my foot finally didn't hurt. It was HOT by this point, and there were a LOT of people on the trail - including a group doing trail work? I was pretty frustrating that it was more gain than I had expected, and it seemed like I was not going to be able to hit my goal of a sub 8 race.

I ran what I could, actually passed a few more people, and finally finished.
I have NEVER been in such pain after crossing a finish line. I barely hobbled over to the table to fill up one of my bottles since I had run out, and then sat down at a picnic table. My feet were THROBBING. If you know me at all, you know that I am basically dead inside, and this pain actually had me in tears. I could not believe how bad my feet hurt! Ben went to the car and got my flip flops while I took my shoes off. I seriously expected my feet to be bloody stumps based on the pain and was shocked to see that I had zero black toenails and not a single blister. I think it was just all the loose rocks on the trail that messed me up. Had a beer in the shade before getting a picture on our way out.

Thoughts:
  • Very convenient to Phoenix if you fly in. We stayed in Scottsdale the night before and it was about 25 minutes to the start line. Nothing really close to the race start - be sure you get food/water prior to heading out as the race starts very early and the only food we were able to get on the drive was Starbucks.
  • This was a pretty decent course. I didn't love having the last 7 miles be without water. I'd prefer to do the loop FIRST, then do the out and back so as not to have longest aid station gap be at the end, personally.
  • Volunteers were great, but aid stations were pretty unimpressive. Outside of pb&j, the only "food" was bean roll-ups - fancy wording for refried beans on a tortilla. I survived since I was only doing 50k, but there was also a 50 miler, and that would NOT have been enough for me. Lots of snack stuff that doesn't really have any calories or substance.
  • Shirt is cute - gender specific and RED - which is my favorite color.
  • Same medal no matter the distance, which I do not like - I mean there was a 5k there, and they got the same thing as the 50k?? Maybe the 50 miler was different, but I didn't see what they looked like.
  • Saw multiple photographers on the course, yet AGAIN there was only one small sequence of pics of me on course and not at the section where there were cacti - which is pretty much the prettiest part of the course. Pics were $9, which is competitive, but again, only fast people seemed to get really good ones. I complain about this a lot.
  • I wouldn't run this again, but it was a good experience to learn what Arizona trails are like in training for Cocodona.

Space Coast South Course half marathon (Race Recap)

Cocoa Beach, FL
Sunday, November 28
Half Marathon #191
Weather - PERFECT!

Heather and I had been talking about this race for 10 years. Ten. She signed up earlier this year, and of course I had to invite myself along to join her. I asked Ariel if she had any interest in also racing, and she said "sure" - mainly because we were planning a girl's weekend and she thought that sounded fun.

Expo

The expo was being held outside, the same location as where the race start was. We didn't have a lot of luck finding parking, so once we were walking around we made sure to look at the map to find out where the best lots were to park in for race day. We got our packets, which included our GINORMOUS medal - apparently this was the 50th anniversary of the race, so that was neat. We found out that we got free beer, so we each had one while we walked around. Nothing of excitement for us, so we didn't spend a ton of time there.

Race Day

With four people in the house needing to get ready, we got up earlier than I would have planned. Based on how the morning went, it was good that we were up early. I had a bagel with peanut butter and some coffee, and we were out the door a few minutes earlier than planned, around 5:00 am - since our goal was to be parked at the mall with enough time to catch the last shuttle bus that was leaving at 5:30 am.

We got a few minutes away from the house when Ariel said that she had forgotten her shoes. I thought she was kidding, but she wasn't, so I turned around. She ran in and got her stuff and then we headed back out. We got about 10 minutes away from the house when Ariel says she forgot her bib. OMG. This time I'm a bit more agitated. We go back to the house AGAIN, and this time she assures me she has everything. We actually arrived at the mall with a few minutes to spare, but we are wondering why there are 3-4 buses and only a handful of cars. Either way, we get on the bus and are dropped off with plenty of time to spare. We got in the bathroom line while Ariel did bag drop.

The north course and full marathon had a time of 6:00, but we didn't start until 6:20. We had gotten back in line for a second bathroom trip, but Ariel was worried about starting on time, so I walked her to the 2 hour pace group and wished her luck. She has been training so hard all season, I'm glad I convinced her to run alone with a pace group than slum it with me and Maureen.
We actually started a few minutes early, so it was a good thing that we had gotten to our corral a little early. Steph had in my plan to take it easy and warm up for the first two miles, so I didn't feel bad at all for stopping briefly after the first turn to take a picture of the sunrise - it was gorgeous.

When we signed up we put 2:15 as an estimated finish time, but I'll be honest and say that I had hoped to run closer to 2:10, or possibly match/beat my time from Poland, which I believe was a 2:08. It wasn't in the cards for the day, but that was ok. We ran pretty relaxed, walked all the aid stations, took beer a few times on course (plus a Bloody Mary shot) and even used the bathroom once. I was pretty surprised when we saw Ariel running with the 1:55 pace group! She looked happy and relaxed.
Pic from Heather (I wasn't ready!)

Pic from Dave - who we saw at the finish. Hadn't seen him in YEARS.

Another pic from Dave
The miles flew by with chatting and admiring the mansions that lined the road on one side, and the private docks on the other side. I don't know what I expected from the race, but I was really impressed with the course overall, and enjoyed the trees and quiet residential atmosphere, along with the water. It made for a very enjoyable course!

Once we hit the turn around, the weather actually seemed to improve. It was still overcast and there was a slight breeze, so the conditions were basically perfect for running. We actually picked up the pace towards the end - even running mile 13 at a sub 10 pace, and sub 9 pace for the "sprint" to the finish. Mo had a bit more of a kick than I did, and beat me by a few seconds.
Pic from Ariel - trying not to die running into the finish
Overall, I felt really good during this race. With all the trail running I have been doing, I haven't been running roads/flats very consistently, so while I'm a tiny bit disappointed in my pace, it probably couldn't have gone much better.
We had to do a drop bag to get finisher pictures with our medals since they gave them to us at the expo

Thoughts:
  • As I said, we've been talking about this race for a DECADE. Did it disappoint? NO! It was a fun atmosphere and the day was basically perfect.
  • Shirt is a "cheap" brand, but pretty cool looking. Unisex size, however.
  • Medal is HUGE. I compared to the others in my collection when I got home, it's the third biggest one I have after Little Rock marathon 2013 and North Country 50 Mile.
  • Logistics seemed more complicated than they were. The parking was free for race day and the shuttle was easy. Signage after the race to get back to the buses were easy to follow.
  • Post-race was really good! Beer and chocolate milk, plus a bizarre combination of mac and cheese (delicious!) and eggs (?). I did not have eggs.
  • The ONLY thing I didn't like about this race is the weekend they have it! That is the reason I have never done it - it really sucks traveling over Thanksgiving because of how expensive airfare is.
  • Would I run again? Yes, if I was closer.

Week in Review (November 23 - November 29)

Tuesday (6,693 steps) - Work in the office. Left work early so I could get my booster shot.
Wednesday (8,672 steps) - Work in the office. Actually got out of work early for the holiday and met Ben at New Image for a beer.
Did a Peloton ride when I got home. It actually snowed a bit! (It did NOT snow at the airport, so we are still officially snow free for the season still.
Thursday (14,762 steps) - Slept in a "bit" since we didn't have plans to meet up with everyone until 9:00 for a turkey trot on the canal trail by North Table. It was a lot warmer than I thought it would be, since it was sunny. We brought Pika with us and I decided to run with her since I was supposed to be taking it easy anyway. Ariel ran with Lisa and Ben ran with Joe doing a loop on the upper trails.

Pika hasn't been running much and I was really impressed that she was able to run the entire time. When Ariel passed us on the way back she was running and trying to catch her, but thankfully, she couldn't keep up (because I wouldn't be able to run that fast either, haha).
Lots of dogs today!
Headed home to have a small lunch, shower and finish packing. Kristin had invited us over for Thanksgiving "dinner" (it was at 3, so not sure what meal that is). It was DELICIOUS, and the perfect meal before our travel started.
Thanks to the traveling over Thanksgiving, the only affordable way to get to Florida was a red eye ON Thanksgiving. Ben gave me, Ariel and Maureen a ride to the airport around 8:00 for our 11:20 flight. We barely were able to get a beer before they shut down all the restaurants for the night.

I was not surprised at ALL that I was not able to sleep on the first leg of our journey (oh, did I mention we had a connection in Fort Lauderdale?)
Friday (9,234 steps) - We arrived early enough in Fort Lauderdale that nothing was open yet. I desperately needed coffee. Since the "long" flight was a bust in terms of sleep, I knew I was in for a long day of sleep deprivation. We amused ourselves by watching a maskless woman take approximately 300 selfies of herself. Breakfast was coffee and a croissant - yum! Flight to Orland was really quick, only about 30 minutes. After we landed we had to take the shuttle to get our rental car. The rental itself was pretty easy - and we opted to go back to the airport to pick Heather up. We got "lost" driving around in circles trying to find her - ending up with accidentally ending up in the lot for commercial vehicles and getting yelled at. We were all hungry so Ariel did some research and directed us to a restaurant for breakfast. I had MORE coffee and a giant burrito. We still had time to kill before we could check into our AirBnb, so we went to a nature preserve on the way to Cocoa Beach. We didn't see much other than a few birds and a lizard.

We had MORE time to kill, so we went to a brewery near the BnB - this one was "meh" - but it was nice to sit and relax for a bit.
FINALLY, it was time to check in. I had found a Disney themed place that seemed like it was centrally located for everything that we wanted to do over the weekend.

My room
We were hungry pretty early and decided to go to the pizza place down the street. We all shared a large pizza and it was actually enough food for all of us.
Made a trip to Publix to get food for breakfast and a bunch of bottled water before heading to the Florida Key Lime Pie Company. Ariel and I got a Key Lime pie slice, as well as a chocolate cheesecake slice to share. This place also sold Florida craft beer by the single can, so I ended up getting 12 (gulp) to drink over the course of the long weekend.
Shouldn't be a surprise that I was completely exhausted and went to bed VERY early - although I think I made it past 8:00.
Saturday (13,112 steps) - Slept in, and got over 10 HOURS of sleep, haha. I guess that doesn't even really make up for zero sleep the night before, though. After breakfast Ariel, Maureen and I went for a shake out run. We didn't have a plan of where to go and ended up near the water. It was warm and it felt really hard.
We all showered and then headed over to the expo. It was set up outside and we didn't have the best luck finding parking, so figuring out race day logistics seemed very important.
We were able to get a beer with our packet and we wandered around the expo a bit, but there wasn't anything of interested to me. We walked across the street to the "Village Idiot" for a quick lunch and a beer.

Our big activity of the day was going to the Kennedy Space Center. We had thought that a few hours would be plenty of time, but turns out we could easily have spent at least another hour there. It was "expensive-ish" but worth it. Even learned a few things!

Definitely worth the wait to see this!

We had decided to eat at the same pizza place for dinner. We ended up having to get it to go because they were severely understaffed and the wait was pretty long. We got a couple pizzas to go and this delicious dessert that Ariel and I shared.
Time to get stuff ready for race morning, as we were going to have a VERY early wake up.
Sunday (29,167 steps) - 4 am wake up call for Space Coast (South Course) half marathon. Recap to follow.
We headed back to the BnB. No recollection of the rest of the day. Heather left with her sister to go to Disney World and Maureen went out to eat with her brother. Ariel and I just sat around the BnB and watched 30 Rock (yay, it's back on Netflix!). Ariel had decided we were going to go get burgers for dinner - we went to a place called Checkers that was... ok. We don't have those in Denver, but it was basically fast food.
Relatively early bedtime again!
Monday (14,385 steps) - We had to be out of the BnB by 10, but since our kayaking had been moved to the afternoon we got to sleep in a bit. Checked out around 9:30, picked up coffee at Dunkin' and then headed down the coast to Desoto to see the manatees!

We couldn't believe how many there were! We watched them for a bit - they were so cute and came up fairly often to breathe. We still had some time to kill before our kayaking adventure, but most of that time was spent trying to find a store to buy sunscreen, we eventually just stopped at a gas station. I was glad that Ariel preferred doing something like this rather than spend a ton of money going to Universal or Disney. Our group wasn't very big, there were only four other people besides us and the guide. We ended up kayaking over two miles and a couple hours on the water. We only saw one manatee while we were out, so I was happy we had gone to see them earlier.

A jellyfish that doesn't sting!

Mangrove tunnels
We finished up the tour around 3 and we were STARVING. The place the guide recommended ended up being closed, so we went back to the pizza place AGAIN, but this time, we got pasta. It was tasty!
Immediately after finishing we headed to Orlando, since we had plans to crash a run club. On the way there, we stopped at a plant store so Ariel could get a "Florida" succulent. It was there that I realized I didn't have my credit card, I had left it at the restaurant. It was over an hour to go back there, so I told them to just cut it up since I had a back up card on me. Frustrating. We found the run club without any problems, but also realized that we were early - so we sat outside while we waited for other people to arrive. It wasn't a big group and they were all much faster than us, so Maureen and I did our own thing and Ariel waited in the car since she didn't even want to walk.
Can you spot us?

We stayed long enough to have a beer and chat a bit with the guy who organizes it. He gave us some swag just for coming - that was nice!
We still had to drive about 20 minutes to check into the hotel near the airport, which ended up being pretty sketchy. Had enough time to repack all our bags and drink the last of my beer. Ariel and I had to share a double bed, but I was so tired I slept pretty well.

Stats:
